Question about Dell Inspiron 1501 Notebook
If the BIOS cannot ID the charger, the battery will not be charged.
There is a fine wire in the middle of the canon plug to the computer, that sends an ID of the adapter to the BIOS. If that pin is bent or broken, then the system will be powered, but the battery charger is disabled. If another AC adapter for a Dell D-series is available, see if the issue goes away with diferent adapter. If no adapter is available, they are <$50 on Ebay.
If you replace the AC adapter, and the issue still occurs, then you'll need to replace the motherboard.
