Amana refrigerator not running but light and water dispenser work

Hello, I was out of town for a week, and when I returned, my Amana SPD26VW refrigerator/freezer was not running. All contents in refrigerator and freezer were room temp. Light works, as does water dispenser. No sounds (like fan, compressor, or other moving parts) coming from it anywhere. Appreciate any help. Thanks.

Thank you both for your quick replies. Last night, I did some online searching for a solution also, and suspected the defrost timer. I manually turned it -- no response. Got to the point where it clicked, then went slightly past that point, and it clicked again. I assume that the 2 clicks were the defrost cycle on, then off. Past the second click, still no action. So I put the notch in the dial to the "9 o'clock" position to see if it would move over time. Went to bed. Got up this a.m., and the fan was running. Looked at the switch and it was just barely past the 9 o'clock location. A couple minutes later, the compressor came on. Cold air now blowing inside the freezer and refrigerator sections.

So, after that long winded description -- does it sound like the defrost timer is bad (working intermittently) or is it still possibly something else, like the thermostat, as suggested above? If it is the defrost timer, can I just disconnect it and run the refrigerator until I get a replacement timer?

    I appreciate your help.

Hi, Remove the front kick plate at the bottom and locate the defrost timer box. You will see a hole and there will be a round switch you can turn. Turn in clock wise and see if the refrigerator starts.
If it starts, the timer needs changed. If it does not starts. locate the cold control (thermostat)
Check continuity on the switch. If it is the on position and the circuit is open, you need to replace it.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

i would take off the back and feel the compressor, if its hot then it is struggleng to come on if not
make sure the unit is unpluged then disconnect the overload and relay they often fail and cuses the sysmtoms you speak of

Not cooling

If it's clicking on and off like you say, replace the compressor start relay device and overload protector. These are located directly on the side of the compressor, usually contained within a dark plastic cover.

Amana SPD26VW runs, lights on, does not freeze

I called Amana and found the "sealed systems" are still under warranty. It cost me $85 for a service call and the fridge is working. The problem was a plugged "capillary line."

Ice/water dispenser not lit or working

I think this is probably just a coincidence that you changed the water filter and a couple of weeks later the dispenser doesnt work. If it failed the same or next day then possibly related but unlikely. The water filter purely affects the water supply line. Does the dispenser (water) make a noise (clicking) when activated. If it does then I would check the incoming water supply. If it makes no noise then you possibly have an electrical fault not providing power down to the water solenoid valve. The way to check the ice dispenser is to see if you first have any ice production if you do then again it could be an electrical control fault. You could check the underneath of the cabinet low level for the wiring connection from the door to see if it is dislodged or damaged however if it is a control issue then I would suggest contacting a good fridge tech. Hope this helps.
