Question about Lasko 3723 Floor / Box Fan

1 Answer

Lasko 3723 burnt motor

I bought a lasko box fan (model 3723) a month ago and when I started it the first time it didn't sound right. When switched it to the high setting, it seemed to be laboring to move. Turned it off, then back on, and it was fine. After using it about half a dozen times, the last time it was switched on my wife found it about 20 min later, it was off and smelling burnt. It hasn't worked since. I took it apart and there's not much to it, no fuses to burn out, just internal exposed wiring and motor parts, plus one capacitor. Could it be that the capacitor burnt out? I guess what I'm asking is - how do electric motors burn out? Is there arcing that occurs between the copper wire coils? If I replace that capacitor, will that fix it? I lost the receipt (bought it at Sears) and threw out the box, so I doubt I can get it replaced...

Sorry but you need to purchase a new fan.
some times the motor is not aline correctly and the rotor "part that spins the blade" rubs on the stator "the part with the copper wire:" the motor
over heat with the friction, then smoke followed by the coil burning.

My Lasko 2517 tower fan won't turn on. Have tried

Here is my problem. MY Lasko 4820 Model, is having issues with starting up. Example I turned it on and the rotation stand that moves the tower works. But the fan motor or something realetted is not moving. The fan itself won't move on setting 3, 2, or 1. I don't use the ionizer (I have a smoke detector that picks ionized things and smoke) in my room. I've looked at similar issues or the same and a is different in some way or issue. I've never taken it apart, and one more thing I don't have any solutions because I bought it atva Thrift Store for $29.99 and dident know if someone broke it possibly in the past. No remote either. It has 5 buttons. Middle: Power. Top right: Ion. Botten right: Fan speed/setting (3, 2, 1) Top left: Timer (1hr, 2 hr, 4 hr.) Bottem left: Rotation for whole tower. Please Post anything that may help. Please do NOT respond with "Thats you're fault for buying it at a cheap junk sore" and something related to Criticizing me for getting it at a place that has used items. I know that, just give anything that Will help this issue.

A couple months ago, I had a Lasko box fan that shorted out. It had been rattling for months, and toward the end it became a lot quieter. The fan was old. There was a weird smell and I saw a spark inside...

Howdy,

If your fan is older, it may require oiling. On the motor you should see a hump, or a hole in the center of the housing, and then a small hole on the top side of the center of the housing. Inside is a wicking material which holds oil. When this dries out, you will notice the fan stops quicker and may take a while to get up to speed when you start it cold. Here's a video from a friend of mine on how to oil a fan. Yours should be similar to this.

Lasko fan

I can tell you how to take the fan blades off your Lasko Model 3723 fan, but you might not be able to use it on your other fan. The reason why is that the motors, although similar, may not have the same diameter shaft.

Of course, you should have the power cord unplugged from the AC outlet before removing the front fan grille and placing your hands on the blades. Safety first!

The fan blades and hub are a single unit that stretches to fit onto the motor shaft. There is no setscrew at all. Take any sort of metal bar or tool such as a screwdriver or pry bar and carefully lever the hub off the shaft by pressing your lever to lift the hub a small fraction of an inch on each side, working the hub slowly upwards against the long vertical bars that support the motor. If you have reasonably strong hands, you may be able to pull the hub toward you by placing your fingertips under the edge of the hub and pressing with your thumbs against the vertical support bars as needed. It's not too difficult to do.

Good luck!
