I have a uniden atlantis 270. It receives well at 6 watts but only transmits for a distance of about 300 metres (even when using the 6w boost button. What ca I do to increase the transmit range?

I don't know what this radio is, but perhaps I can help. First of all, 6 watts is output power and has nothing to do with receiving. With such a short transmit distance, my first suspicion is something very wrong with the antenna. Has the SWR on the antenna been checked? Let's start from there.

Kenwood ts-440. Not transmitting.

Gee Randy, you didn't give a lot of information about your problem for us to go on. Does the radio go into transmit but no power is produced in the AM mode? AM is the first mode to check. Make sure that you have your RF POWER control turned fully clockwise. You should see about 40W of output. If you don't see any output, check for the DC current draw using an ammeter. Look at the current (radio set to AM Mode) during receive, and them go into transmit. If you don't see a substantial rise in current, then is is likely that the PA amplifier has problems, very likely that the output transistors are blown. There is an internal fuse that you should check. That doesn't usually blow, but every once in a while, it will open.

Both phones are displaying out of range please advise

Walkie talkies talk to each other. Try transmitting (talk to each other) so they receive a signal first. Do it in the same room. The try for range. It is not much. Even for a GMRS radio, these are low power and short range. Under 2 miles, must be able to "see" each other.

Problem no squelch noise or speaker like its muted, but can hear weather ok shows receiving and ant ok

Since the radio cannot transmit on Weather bands, there is no need for the radio to detect if it is transmitting when receiving weather.
In CB mode (on CB channels) the radio will mute when transmitting. So... a guess is that it is muting, or transmitting all the time in CB mode. Check for a mic problem by removing the Mic from the radio ... if it receives CB with no mic connected, then there is an issue with the mic. Otherwise, unless the unit is in PA mode (public address mode) it is likely something internal and beyond the scope of this service.

When I plug in headphones the radio goes into transmit mode.

This is a common problem when the audio device is plugged in when the radio is turned on. Be certain to have your radio turned off when plugging in the audio device.

If this is not the case, your audio device is not compatible with your radio, or your radio has a bad accessory jack.

Best regards.

Vhf radio

If there is power output, you need to use a watt meter and verify that your antenna is good. Depending on the antenna you can also check for a shorted or open connector or cable with an ohm meter.

Hope that helps...
