I was under the impression that the third belt is a larger belt that rotates the carousel, and it is located under the carousel -- so you would have to lift/remove the carousel to get to it (which would probably give you some new problems). I could be wrong about this, but that's the impression I've gotten from everything I've learned about the CX400. If you're having problems with your unit, the third belt might NOT be the cause of it. If you're not having problems you'd probably be better off leaving that third belt alone. Best of luck to you. Hopefully somebody else will chime in with some useful info.
SOURCE: The belts broke on my 400 Cd Sony player. Have it

Thank you very much Terry! I tend to agree with you. Those first two belts are easy to view & change. I have located them at Sears Parts Direct. The person at Sony sent me there. I'm hoping (like you) that replacing those two only will solve the problems. The entire unit began sqeeling some months ago & finally basically quit moving. I feel removing the carousel could actually cause the whole thing to gety out of sync & like you said could cause more problems. That I would regret. I'm ordering all three belts anyway in the event someone else chimes in with exactly what to do. Thank You Again! Johnny
Great Terry, I sure hope they do solve the problem. I know the CD400 is old technology, yet I would like to keep it running. Just a note about those carousel players. I discovered earl they will scratch you CD's. I started making copies of my original CD's & NEVER put my store bought CD's in there again. FYI...I also have a Sony CDP-CX205. The door opens manually & I can actually see TWO belts on that when the door is open. Those two belts look totally different. I have not tested that unit yet. I have turned it on & no squeeling. That unit is actually a year or so older than the 400. I'm still hoping someone chimes in on how to change the belt UNDER the carousel. With specific instructions, I'm OK to get in there, but I DO KNOW MY LIMITS :)....I will keep you posted. Thanks, Johnny
I'm in big trouble if you're right about the scratched CDs because I own eight of these units (one cx400, six cx455's and one cx300) that are all just about filled to capacity. I have thousands of CDs in my collection and most of them are the store-bought ones, not copies. I've read in the past where several others have said the same thing about these units scratching their CDs. I haven't seen it happen with my CDs yet, though. I'm very careful when inserting or removing the CDs from the units. I've had problems with CDs skipping in various ways which led me for a while to think that it was because the CDs were getting scratched, but upon further analysis I determined that the CDs were skipping for other reasons. Why do I have eight of these units? Well, I'm a serious lover of music and these units allow the user to do some cool things with programming selections to play in any order you want. And when you connect two of them together and use the "No Delay" or "Cross-Fade" features, the songs play without interruption because one unit will be playing while the other unit's carousel is spinning and loading the next selection. I like to take favorite musical artists and split their CDs between two units and construct programs of 32 songs per unit for that artist (32 is the maximum each unit will allow for programming) for a total of 64 songs between the two units. For example, I can take all my Beatles CDs (including bootlegs) and split them between two cx-455's and make a program that plays my favorite Beatles tunes in the order I want, starting with my very favorite Beatles tunes, with no pause when each tune ends -- it just immediately goes to the other unit and starts playing the next tune. This is a fun hobby for me and allows me to hear music in different ways that keeps it fresh for me, instead of listening to a CD straight through as is. I hope to someday be able to sell my units and get a digital audio music system that does the same thing but without taking up a lot of space with CDs and cx's -- something like what is offered by a company called Olive (see www.olive.us). The large-capacity unit I want is out of my price range now, though, so for now I'm sticking with the Sony cx's.
Very Cool Terry! I took a look at the Olive site. Some interesting products. You may want to check a site called Spacial Audio. They have some programs called SAM. A friend of mine uses the pro version for his internet radio station. I gives him options for commercial placement, station jingles, etc. Another friend owns a mobile dj business & uses a simpler version of SAM. With this program, it is best using a computer devoted to this ONLY & a second hard drive from what I understand. You might wanna take a look at their site. I believe there are some you tube videos on them as well. My dj friend & others suggest NO anti virus program be used with the SAM programs at all. Somehow they conflict and cause major problems. FYI....Back to the Sony carousel units, there is a retired radio engineer on ebay whose specialty is refurbishes these units & sells them. He also repairs them. His reviews are excellent. I was amazed to discover him. If you enter the Sony CDP-cx400 on ebay, you will see it. The belts I ordered are due to arrive this Wednesday the 26th. I hope that makes everything happy! I'm feeling like that third mystery belt is going to be sitting o the shelf for a very long time. This turntable/carousel removal sounds like a place I dont wanna go!!! Let me know your thoughts on these SAM products. The one my dj friend uses would probably be an alternative to what you & I are doing now. Only problem is cost & making the change. Also the CD's would require making mp3's of EVERYTHING! That's it for now.Have a good week. Johnny
GOOD NEWS!! The THREE belts actually arrived Saturday & I didn't check the box until yesterday (Sunday). Today I removed the TWO visible belts, the ones taht are exactly the same. I cleaned the rubber residue off where the belts were. It took some time to get the replacements on so they were seated flat. They wanted to twist around, so it took some patience to get them smooth & flat. The back was the harder to deal with. I'm happy to report that all is happy & my 400 is back on the shelf & playing just great at this moment. I am very thankful that you suggested to try those two first & hope the third was OK. Well, you were right!!!! So, the third belt (that I did not need) will be on the shelf. Thank you again!! Johnny
Can't send a long reply for some reason.
Man, that's fantastic! I'm so glad I could help in my small way, and I hope the unit keeps working well into the future.
I checked out SAM like you recommended.
Hey Terry, I made a mistake the other day, I think I clicked "Stop Receiving Updates on This problem"...I sent Fixya an email telling them I thought I had clicked that by accident. All of the sudden, your replies came to me. That is possibly why you were having trouble sending me messages. I hope they corrected my error! My player has been working all day. I am VERY happy!!
Cool, Johnny! This site still won't let me send a reply that's much larger than this one.
Here's the rest of my reply that got cut off.
