Adjust the Recording level

Double click on the Speaker in the Icon Tray under the clock
Select the microphone. Make sure is it not muted
If you have an Advance Button at the bottom Click it.
Add +20dB boost (increases pickup level)
If no advanced button. Click OPTIONS (on top)
Then Properties, then select RECORDING
from there you can check the +20dB boost.

Also verify that is the correct type mic- If it is from a headset you should be good to go.

The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

SOURCE: accessories for laptop...Dell Inspiron 1100. sound card, microphone and speakers

No, you'll have to buy a microphone and plug it into the microphone jack on the chassis.

If you buy a webcam, many have a built-in microphone in the webcam.

The microphone jack of my Dell Inspiron 1100 seems to be malfunctioned. When I plug in a microphone, the other side does not hear anything. I tried several different microphones and none of them worked....

Check if the correct recoding device is selected on sound properties, and verify if mic is mute.Test mic using the sound recording program.
Try to uninstall and reinstall the sound driver.
Perform diagnostic on the audio using the drivers and utility disc. if mic is not working on the diagnostic tool then need to replace the sound card.

Microphone input on Dell Inspiron B130 doesn't work

Your jack may have been damaged, or the apple mic may not be compatible. Purchase another pc compatible mic to check. Or you could try a multimedia headset with mic that plugs into your usb port. Take a look at RadioShack for headsets, I saw one in a store near me. and they should have them online.

Dell Inspirion 1521 Laptop Microphone Wont Work

checklist:
1. sound driver 2. microphone settings in volume control applet 3. tap test (tap the area around the microphone and see if eg Sound Recorder picks it up) 4. external microphone
If you get to step 4 before you get anything then your problem is one of missing or damaged microphone.

There is NO built in microphone with this laptop. You will need to purchase an external microphone and plug it into the mic in socket.
