I have a virgin broadband modam and a linksys wrt54g wireless G Router, but i don't have the CD, I connected the router to the modem but could not get internet even though my computer said i am connected. I could or at least use to be able to connect to the routers web page http://192.168.1.1/ manage to make some configurations but I have left 3 security ports open 1.Block Anonymous Internet request 2 filter multicast 3. filter internet Nat Redirection. Is it dangerous to use the internets with these ports open? I read some blogs relating to how one can get internet with the linksys wrt54g which said to take out the cable from the routers internet port and place it instead into one of the four routers ports this is what i have done. I then could get internet but have been unable to obtain wireless or routers web page, not even when I converted back the cables to their original positions i could no longer obtain routers web page. can u plz advise me thanks . And can you tell me do I have to have the CD inorder to have this router fully functioning? I was under the impression
one does'nt until i encountered these problems.
No you do not need internet to access router page. I believe it is 192.168.0.1 though, have you tried this yet?

- you might try "netsh i i r r" in a command window with administrative rights, also reboot the cable modem to make sure it is bound to the correct MAC address.
I think the first step is to get the firmware on the modem.
My suggestion
1) Connect your PC to the cable modem
2) Download the driver to your PC http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT54G
3) Connect your PC to you WRT54G and Cable Modem
4) Select Firmware upgrade
5) Point to the downloaded firmware and install
Turn everything off
1) Turn on cable modem
2) Turn on Router
3) Turn on PC
Hopefully, you will then have an unsecured wireless network that you can then tighten up.
in case you cannot access the
router's web page on a wried connection:
ping IP address:
start-run-cmd-ok--on the blinking cursor, type: ipconfig, get the IP
address if the IP address is not in the segment of 192.168.1.x.
then type: ipconfig/release,
and type: ipconfig/renew
type ipconfig again, if the
IP address is still 198.168.0.x
and make sure all the
computers connected to the router and the switch is set to automatically
detect the IP address and the DNS is all set to auto detect...
how to access XP...goto to
control panel and select network connections (for vista network and
sharing center, manage network connections) and right click on the LAN,
select properties select tcp/ip and click properties. and selct
automatically assigns IP address and DNS
access 198.162.0.1
router's configuration page and set the settings IP addressing to
DHCP or auto assigning the IP addresses and the DNS
set the router mac address to
the middle option set to computer mac address
for the wireless, set the
ssid to your name, set the region to USA, set the channel to 6 or
11, setr the mode to g and b.
then for the external
wireless adapter: how to access XP...goto to control panel and select
network connections (for vista network and sharing center, manage network
connections) and right click on the wireless connections, select
properties
select tcp/ip and click
properties. and selct automatically assigns IP address and DNS.
