Question about Sony Walkman MZ-R55 Personal MiniDisc Player

Open Question

Problem w/ recording

The LCD keeps displaying PROTECTED when I try to record. This has never happened before. The protection tab on the minidisc is not engaged, the HOLD switch is not engaged and the minidiscs are recordable. Any other troubleshooting ideas?

While holding down the Pause button, push Record. The display should blink the disc icon and REC. Then push the <<| until the display shows 001. Then push the pause button to start recording. This will start it from the beginning. You can use this feature to start recording at the beginning of any track you choose. You can download a manual for this machine at:

I hope this helps.

SOURCE: Issues downloading audio files from Sony minidisc to my computer

You can't. You can only transfer digital files from your pc to your Minidisc player., it's a one way street. there's no hack for it either as it's a basic hardware issue within the player itself.

If you want to download from the player to the pc you'll have to connect the audio output to your pc and record it the old-fashioned way which loses a bit of quality. All Minidisc compliant players were like this until the advent of the Hi MD format which succeeded the Net MD's as an anti-piracy measure.

My minidisc recorder is showing 'protected' message when I try to record. Minidisc is blank and new. Problem is not with the write protection tab.Any suggestions please?

There are only two possibilities - there IS something wrong with your write-protect tab (try opening and closing it once), or there is something wrong with the little arm that reads the tab (perhaps it got bent).

What happens if you use a different disc?

the solution which seems to have worked for most people is to take the unit apart and make sure that the ribbon cables inside the unit are all attached properly.

Write protection

Did you record the material using SonicStage or a USB connection? If you did, you will have to erase this material using the same program. You won't be able to do it with the MD.
