My SB-600 wont turn on also. I've put fresh batteries several times but I still cant get it to turn it on. What could be the problem?

Went out of country without camera, came back and now SB600 will not power up. It is not the batteries. Tried several sets, even Camera's West store could not get it to start up with working batteries in another unit. Don't think I dropped it. Just stopped working. Tried the pencil eraser trick to clean contacts, but no difference. It is about 2 years old and fired perfectly about 2000 times I would guess.

Same Problem. It just stopped working.

I too am having the same problem with my SB-600 - it just stopped working. I brought it to a Nikon dealer and they thought it may be the capacitor and it would need to be sent to Nikon. I'm thinking it may be cheaper to just replace for $175

i have the same problem , next week i will go in nikon service for repair

  • Anonymous Nov 08, 2008

used the sb-600 2 weeks ago for the last time..working perfect.

Yesterday I connect it to my camera(d70s)and it doesn't work.??

There is light in the screen...and that's all...nothing appears.

Try new batteries but nothing changed.Just the light in the screen (permanently)Have to send it to a servicecenter I guess.

Same problem as others. Haven't used the flash for a couple months now it won't turn on. Tried new batteries, no difference.

I have the same problem. SB 600 used very little. I the past, new batteries, cleaning the contacts, and while holding the on switch, pressing down on the batt door and sliding it gently back and forth would eventually power it up. But not any more. Pretty shabby for a Nikon product.....

Does the flash turn on when you push the battery door down? By push it, I mean HARD... If so, you might be able to cure this by getting some jewelry screwdrivers and flexing IN the metal contacts in the battery compartment door to increase the battery contact.. just be careful not to break the metal (but if you do, a replacement battery cover is about $16)

SOURCE: Nikon Speedlight SB-600 keeps firing

I believe that there is a safety feature built in that if the voltage in the capacitor gets too large the flash will fire, to prevent damage, could be this that is faulty, if it is a new main circuit board is required.

Batteries may have leaked. Open battery chamber and clean ---especially the contacts situated at the bottom -- with pencil erazor. Blow out any loose bits and with new batteries try to switch the unit on.
