One person on the forum was using Ativan for this disorder and it made it worse not better
I went to the search bar and typed in --what is hypnic jerks --and there is a wealth of pages that discuss the issue what it is , what causes it , treatments and general forums on it
there is no actual causes for it but there are a lot of theories but no definitive answers
The AAOSM however studied this particular issue and the scientists have come up with a few possible causes
Some include stress, coffee, anxiety, exercising late at night
reference - www.sleepadvisor.org
This site in particular has each possible cause listed and what to do so it may be better to do it without drugs if you can pinpoint what is starting you off in the first place
If the search engine does nothing more that give you information on which to question your doctor for better diagnosis and treatment plans that will be a start

Unloader valve is the most likely suspect here.
Remove and clean with penetrating oil then reinstall.
Also add some LIGHT oil into your supply hose via a small funnel. 3-in-1 household oil or power steering fluid lubricate the valve and pump quite well. Three or four treatments of a couple ounces each will usually make the pump happy again. If this unit has an OIL-FILLED pump on it you can expect good results. If it runs an OIL-LESS pump it is only rated for about 100 total hours of life!
Hope this helps.
