Question about Kenmore 50522 / 50524 Side by Side Refrigerator
About once a week the refrigerator turns off and takes about more than full day till it turns back on??
We don't see too many of these models anymore.
You either have a thermostat that is sticking or an icemaker timing problem.
The thermostat should be easy enough to check. When it is off for awhile you can try wiggling the thermostat knob and see if it comes back on. I am betting you have already tried this and it hasn't worked so that leaves the icemaker.
On this model of fridge you have the flextray icemaker. The defrost control and timer are built into the icemaker control. You most likely have some worn gears or pins in the timer mechanism causing it to stick in the defrost cycle.
You can still get replacement parts for it but I don't recommend trying to repair the icemaker yourself without some detailed instructions to go by because the mechanism must be timed to work properly. You can buy the complete rebuilt icemaker assembly and change it out. That is what I would recommend. You can change the whole thing cheaper than having someone come out and repair yours.
If you have a Whirlpool dealer around that has an older repairman that remembers how to work on one of these you could probably take the icemaker to them and get it repaired economicly. I would call them and ask before taking it up there because the fridge won't run without the icemaker hooked up.
Hope this helps
Post back and let me know how it comes out or if you have any questions.

Providing your model does not have a digital temperature circuit board, the defrost timer likely is bad. I tried to look your model up and had a problem because I think the make and model is listed incorrectly above your post..
The defrost timer should be near the interior light behind plastic. In the plastic is a plug or a small opening the size of a pencil in diameter. When it stops again turn the black screw about an 1/8 of turn clockwise. If the compressor comes back on the defrost timer will need replaced. If it does not help, try to find the exact model number listed somewhere on the fridge, most times behind and lower right hand corner with the door open, hope this helps, Thanks Sea Breeze
