1989 chevy astro van rough idle/runaway acceleration

89 v6 Astro van has been running rough at idle with gas mileage down to about 8mpg. Seems to run fine at drive speeds w/ maybe some minor vibrations. Smell gas down below pretty heavy. have replaced plugs, wires, button and cap; egr valve, pcv valve and fuel filter. Initially I had been getting a code for speed sensor-replaced and code reset. Took for test drive and van began to accelerate quickly and stepping on brakes did not slow down. This happened only once and I could not duplicate. I should mention I had the cruise disabled by a chevy mech a couple years ago because switch in column was bad. thinking that he removed switch and plugged off a vacuum line? also have been hearing cruise switch on brake pedal sticking but did not replace thinking it did not matter anymore. So my question is for the next step--maybe Throttle pos. sensor, Ign. control mod or maybe the ecu? have had times when i thought tranny shifting was off but this is not verified. thanks for any help--I could sure use it :)

Pull the fuse on your cruise control and see if that helps. Smelling gas is BAD! Either way too rich or a leak. Check the lines,,and even the filler pipe. A hole can cause a vacuum leak that will affect the air /gas mix etc. You have more than one fix going on with this one.

dont see anyfuses on fuse panel for cruise control. would this be under the hood? didnt find any gas leaks-neighbor next door said because van was running so rich had a buildup of vapors in catalytic converter? have since retested map sensor and find readings erratic, but corresponding to engine misfires with vltg readings fluctuating from around 3 down to .7--dont know if it is supposed to do that but it only goes down when engine is missing. today when i was driving (have to get to work, I know I shouldnt drive)started to bog down and backfire thru throttle body sporradically. according to some posts ive read, this leans to timing. going to pull rotor button/cap and reinstall old ones (they were worn but still ok.) recheck plugs for gap and color. after that I'm lost guys. have been trying to check egr solenoid (got an egr light after installing new one-reset and hasnt returned) some of my readings seem shady but i must admit to not really being a 100% on testing instructions. so what do you think? ignition? or a sensor?

I think you are running way too rich on fuel for one thing and I would ignore the sensors because they are doing what they are designed to do,,,flag the problem. Yes the fuel is probably going through the cat and your O2 bank 2 sensor is flagging a rich mixture coming out the pipe. MAYBE a stuck fuel injector. I would definitely check out the injectors. A clogged air filter will also mess up the air /fuel mix. Put a mirror by the end of the tail pipe and see if moisture is building up on it when the vehicle is running. That could be unspent fuel. The only other thing I can think of is possibly a timing issue and maybe the timing chain has jumped a tooth or two and messed up your timeing,, which would result in ignition problems.

MIght want to clean the Mass Air Flow that is on the air intake hose going to the throttle body. They are very sensative and you need a cleaner specifically for them sold at Advanced Auto Etc. When these get dirty they don't send the correct info to the computer about how much air is going to the throttle body. Not a hard job but be gentle on the inside part where the fine wires or screen is.

I know its been a few days (bad weather here) but have not been able to troubleshoot anymore because the serpentine belt popped off and upon closer inspection I found that two of the pwr steering bolts have sheared off and of course they are into the eng. block behind a bracket that wraps around the front of the eng. and would be a bear to pull. I would like to try easy outing these but am unsure how deep I can drill before going past broken bolt. Plus probly should clean area of all fluids etc. not an easy job. so whatdya think? chevy dealer here not much help, cant even find bolts on parts index for me to order and see length. plus would need to remove tie rods etc to have room to drill. (a lift would be nice right about now) any ideas aside from dealer to figure bolt depth? kind of hate to just guess--bad things happen that way. (at least to me). thinking of having it towed. sigh* could use some input. thanks!

OUCH! That is not a good thing to have happen with the power steering bolts. However it is common on those vans. To answer your question, you might need to go to www.autozone.com and make free account, then logon, put in year make and model and then go to repair guides and see what it says. But there is a pay service link to ALLDATA that you may need to use

There is a "spider" injection system in the intake manifold. Check that.

1999 ASTRO VAN ACCELERATES WITH AC ON

It is perfectly normal for the idle speed to increase with the AC on. This is done to ensure that adequate coolant flow is available for the increased strain the compressor puts on the engine.

If the idle increase is too high, there is a safety problem. There is an idle adjustment that can be made to reduce RPM to factory specification when the AC is on.

1997 Chevy Astro Van accelerates without pushing on gas peddal

You are right to be concerned about this behavior since it can definitely increase your stopping distance.
Either your cable has eaten its way into the inner tubing and is hanging up, or the mechanics at the throttlebody needs some lubrication.
With no engine running, have someone inside to press on the accelerator while you watch for movement of the linkage under the hood. Once you have located it, operate it by hand to see how it feels. If the linkage does not return to the stops provided, then use a heavy-duty penetrating oil to soak the moving parts. If it still hangs, then the cable needs replacement.
With the engine running, tranny in Park and the parking brake on, after you have lubed the visible linkage, have some one inside press on the gas and watch the linkage to see if it now returns to the mechanical stop. Carefully move it by hand to see if it is truly at the limits of its travel where it should be at an idle.
