I am trying to find out if it is possible to convert the floppy drive on my Brother embroidery/sewing machine to a USB drive. How can this be done?

The fact that your machine is turning hard says you still have some thread inside the machine that is binding up and activating the safety device. It must turn easily before it will work properly again.
Sometimes the machine must be disassembled to remove these threads.

Look for a mechanical switch that engages the lower drive mechanism.
Testimonial: "That was the trick. I knew it had to be something simple but I couldn't figure it out."
SOURCE: stitching loose. won't thread the fabric
try to rethread the machine all the way back to the spool of thread and check the top and bottom tensions on scrap of same fabric

That's a tough call, parts can be pretty high to fix a machine. Have looked around to price out a new embroidery machine, Janome makes some very nice one in that price range. I'd try ebay there is one which is missing the foot control and hoops for $250.00 just search Brother Pacesetter PC-8200 this may be the ticket you already have the foot control and hoops.
Best of luck
