- thanks for the info- however when I use the reinstall windows XP disc- it only gives me 3 choices-
1- set up XP
2- repair xp install using recovery console
3- quit
when I press enter- it goes to the license agreement but when I try to accept this by hitting F8- nothing happens like the key is dead- the esc key works and the page down key works- so I am back to square one- cannot figure out how to get the hal.dll back onto the computer to boot it up
Don't go to that repair option; that is the recovery console. Continue from that option and if you are attempting to repair your current windows installation, there will be another repair option come up that will delete all the windows files and reinstall them. If you are just trying to reinstall the entire operating system, don't repair, delete the partitions, format the partition, then it will install afresh (this last method will remove all your data as well).
