The direct ignition is intermittent. Some times the coils heat to light the propane and sometimes they don't. aAe there possible cuases I can look for?
Sounds like the controller (board/coils) that send voltage to the heat coil is acting up.trace the wire from the heat coil back to the component.make sure the ground wire (green) is grounded to a clean surface.

That involves changing out the complete burner tray including the igniter/pilot assembly, burners and the gas valve. It runs deep into the cost of a new heater, (well over $1000, not installed).
Do you replace the thermopile or check the milivolts?
Check the Pressure gas
You need replace all of them terminals and check again the milivolts at the gas valve
This is probally your ignition wire is bad and not reading flame at the pilot or your pilot is bent or something so that when the pilot lights the flame isn't hitting the sensor probe at the pilot. When looking under the heater use a mirror so if you get roll out of the flame you don't get burned. Good luck and be careful.
It could be that the Igniter has gone bad. Or it cold be a number of other items, like the gas valve itself. If the heater has a display panel on it, is there an error code showing? If there is, go to your Owner's Manual and find out what the code is for the heater.
