If the rattle is coming from your compressor it would cost more to fix than the fridge is worth i'm sure. the compressor is the only moving part on the unit. the only other component is the thermostat. which you can bypass to see if it cools.

Turn the temp control to max, does the compressor come on? If yes feel the discharge line at the back of the compressor, is it nice and cold? If yes you can eliminate the simple items, make sure all the fans are working inside the fridge and at the rear of the unit. Check to make sure the defrost drain/trap are clear. Let it run for a while, then drop the temp to the usual setting it, and see what happens.
This is one of three issues. First when it is on do you hear a Click sound from the back of the unit and another click within a few seconds. If you hear this and no loud humming sound it is should be the start device. Another way to check for this is to unplug the unit and take off the bottom back panel (usually 1/4 in driver screws for cross tip). Once that is off you will see wires going to the side of the compressor into a little box(start device) on the compressor. Look for any signs of blacking(burnt marks). If you remove the metal clip holding the start device it should pull off. If it sounds like a baby's rattle when you shake it, its toast.

If these checks seem to be ok it is most likely a seal system issue and must be fixed by a Federally approved Technician.
If the Compressor is not making any noise and is cold to the touch then it could be a Defrost Control (240554502) or Refrigerator side Temp Control(5304482075)
The first thing I would do is check the compressor relay These relays give the power to multiple sets of windings in the compressor to get it going. The job of the relay is to drop out power to half of the windings when the compressor gets up to speed. This saves energy and keeps the compressor from overheating. Look for burned marks or smells and loose stuff rattling around in it as a indicator of a bad relay. Compress cold to the touch and compressor fan running is another indicator of a fail relay.
remove the rtc overload off the compressor and shake it,if it rattles thats your culprit, also if when its running and the compressor is quite warm to the touch, its only running on the start windings and isnt actually running right and will overheat and ruin the compressor, replace the rtc its cheaper than a new compressor
well if the a/c has quit working .....the compressor probly finally failed....most times when the clutch hub begins to rattle or becomes real loose it has already worn the compressors snout....that cannot be fixed ...you need a new compressor .......
Sounds like you have a stuck compressor. The buzz is the compressor trying to run but cannot.
A refrigeration mechanic with an hermetic compressor tester can reverse operate the compressor to get it unstuck
If the compressor is getting hot then the compressor is gone. But the price on a relay is fairly cheap so you can at least try it and if it doesnt work then return it and dump the unit. But like I said before when a compressor gets hot it means that the piston is bad and the rings are burnt and the oil is bad in the compressor.
The motor is running but it's not getting cold!! What do I do?
