Question about Canon CanoScan N1220U Flatbed Scanner

1 Answer

The start button on my N1220U scanner no longer initiates a program. I have attempted numerous solutions.

Have used my N1220U scanner for years on my XP computer. I have a second identical scanner, and both give the same results. Both were working until recently. I am not aware of any changes I have made to affect their operation. They go through the normal startup routine. The computer will run a test which cycles through a normal scan cycle, and reports that they are working properly. I have re-loaded the software, and have deleted the device and re-installed it. They are recognized by the computer when I plug them in, and perform the normal startup routine, but pressing the "scan" button does nothing at all.

After trying all the normal fixes, and eliminating the scanner by trying my other scanner, I started doing system restores, first to a week ago, then to a month ago. The third system restore did the trick, but I still have no idea what the problem was.

You have to decide how much trouble you are willing to put into this problem. At this point you have deleted and reloaded the software and drivers, which is the most typical fix. The self test says it is functional but it does not physically test a bad switch. A replacement of this same model sells for under $30, including shipping, on ebay. CNET reports a release date of June 10, 2002. It may be time to move on since it cannot be repaired for the cost of a replacement.

SOURCE: Tvichw32 Driver Open Error

Hello Aunt Pat

(01) Is this scanner "new" to the computer it is installed on now (where you're experiencing these issues)?

(02) Did this problem show up w/out apparent cause or relation to any recent changes on your system (e.g. New hardware or software installed, updated, upgraded or removed; system crash; computer repair; etc.)?

(03) Did the problem appear soon after a change to your system? (see above examples)

There are many references to this issue on the Internet. I've listed a few here. You can find many more, if you like, by performing search engine queries.

THIS links to a Roxio forum thread regarding this issue. (Even if you aren't using Roxio software, the information here could be relevant to your issue.)

THIS link will explain a bit about what TVICHW32 driver is.

I'd reinstall the ASPI drivers. A driver file may have become corrupted. (Assuming you'd been using this scanner successfully on this system until recently.)

You can find links for Adaptec's ASPI drivers on their web site HERE. They also have an ASPI version checker you can run to find out what verison is installed on your computer.

SOURCE: Canoscan 9950F scanner will not scan with Win XP

Since you have had the scanner a while, you may not have a recent enough driver to work well with XP: until I smashed my 9950F, I was scanning under XP with the ScanGear CS 10.324a driver with no problems (the driver is dated 22 June 2007). You can download it from several sources on the web, I used

Other than that, they report some issues if the system drive is NTFS, but I was using NTFS for my system (and only) drive, so I don't see any reason for this to be your problem.

Good luck,
CWM

CanoScan N1220U Scanner Windows 7 64-bit Driver

You may use Hamrick VueScan Pro, it installs a driver that makes 1220 to work. Or, if the version of Windows 7 you use support XP Mode, install it.

It's still a good scanner, and mine is working in 7 x64 using XP Mode!

CanoScan N1220U - Vista Driver

You are right . The Vista drivers are not available, however the australian download for an XP driver works for some people. I would advise you to go to this site
http://www.canon.com.au/products/scanners/scanners_low_medium_volume/canoscanN1220U_drivers.aspx

And do a clean download of the driver for XP and follow all instructions.

How to do a clean download?
Uninstall the current software
Turn off the machine and unplug it
Turn off all your running programs including your virus control
(look in the lower right corner and click on each little icon there and turn off everything you can)
Now download the driver and SAVE it to your desktop
Click on it to install and follow the directions carefully. When it is finished, if it has not told you to reconnect your printer, do so now.
Restart your computer.

Good Luck. Please let me know if this works and rate my solution. Thank You.

Just use the program listed on the following site for the n1220u. I've tested it out myself and it does work.

How do i install my N1220U on vista windows?

Ok, I think I managed to get my Canoscan N650U working with Vista using the XP drivers from the Canon website.

Download the drivers and extract all the files to a directory on your PC.

Connect the scanner, the popup will appear saying found new hardware, normally it wants the files from the CD, but there is an option to find the drivers at a particular location, choose that and point it to where you downloaded the XP Canoscan drivers. Let it install. You should then see it in control panel and can test it OK.

This doesn't do "one button" scans, but I just downloaded "VueScan" for my 10.5.4 Intel Mac and the demo is working great with my Canoscan N1220U.
