Question about GE JASCO (HO97878) 4-Port USB Hub

2 Answers

Overheating I use the hub to connect a scanner and printer at the same time to my Dell Inspiron 6000. Recently my scanner reported unable to conect to laptop - would not scan. I found that hub was very hot to touch. With hub taken out my scanner and printer work fine when plugged directly into my laptop. Both scanner and printer have their own power (do not use power from USB port. Any ideas? Thanks, Chris

Re: Overheating

We had a GE 7 port usb port and it overheated and melted----thank goodness I got up when I did or the house would have caught on fire. The only thing we had connected to the usb port was a APC battery backup unit. Any reason why the usb port overheated?
It was pugged into the battery backup unit and I am hesitant to rehook the computer up to the battery backup unit and also will not by another GE usb hub again and whatever hub we do use, I will not plug it into an outlet!
the computer was downstairs and I noticed the odor of electrical burning smell upstairs---the unit was bought nov 25, 2007 and we returned it to BJ'S for a refund today-----I do not reccomend this product to anyone.

Re: Overheating

You could maybe have a bad USB hub or the Hub is in a very warm area...

Hi just wandering if there is a button like f5 or another to restore ur computer as my keyboard is not working I have a Dell inspiron 6400 laptop about 5 yrs old and need to restore it back? Thnx Sharon

Sometimes Dell has a utility under start menu all programs while running the restore the system. If no utility then you can try the below options.
Try pressing F8 at boot time and choose repair computer...then select Dell factory image restore.
(Win XP might require CTRL+F11 at boot time)
If there is no option to restore factory image then you will probably need to use the original Dell install disk. Press F12 at boot time to boot from CD-DVD and perform install.

How do I connect this to two desk top computers and 1 printer?

You need a router, set a network for the PC and install and connect the printer to 1 of them. After that you need to share the printer on network. So that both PC can use the printer at the same time

Sleep mode will not stay on

There is an option called wake-on-LAN that will wake up your PC if some traffic comes into it from the ethernet.  You will want to disable that feature.
You might find it under setup when you boot you computer, or you might also find it under control panel / power.

Blue screen when playing iTunes on Logitech Z-10 speakers

Before, you return it, can you unplug the Wireless USB Hub, and plug in your iPod and does it work just fine?  Also, the USB port that you're plugging it into - is it USB 2.0?
If both answers are YES to the above - then definitely return it.
It's not your speakers.

Problem with printers

the switch that you have does not require drivers or settings you can change in it. it is just a pass-through device. you can check the cables if they are working or the ports of the switch (if it lights up). moreover, check also the computers if their ip address are configured correctly and within the same range and make sure that the printer is still shared through the network.

you can check this website for reference:

Yes the LAN will report plugged and unplugged when the hub goes on and off.

Is this a new or used hub?
If it is used, how old is it?
Is it plugged into a good power source?
If it's plugged into a surge protector, do any other the other items plugged into the surge protector do the same power on and off?
Has it sustained any damage recently (lightening storms, power surges in the house etc).

There are several possible problems here, and more information is needed to identify which one is causing trouble. First, are you using a high speed dsl or cable internet connection? ...or is your Internet connection a dial-up phone line? This will have a significant effect on how your cables should be connected between the hub and the computers. Windows typically defaults to a 169... address when it is not properly connected to a shared network connection.
