High rpms at start, stuck in gear

No not the whole transmission. Could be a band or servo. It still has to come out and be tore down to fix.

run fault codes to check for accelerator position sensor problems . Check for vacuum leaks. If cable accelerator then check that the return spring on the end of the cable is attached and not missing.

Have the engine checked for vacuum leaks, that will cause a high idle speed. As a 35 year veteran of auto repair I can tell you that engine flushs are a 100% waste of your hard earned money.

Ford designed their transmissions (the early ones) to be in 2nd gear if you put them in second gear. In other it starts out in 2nd, not first, if the shifter is in 2nd. ( they called it "snow gear" ) You are right it could be the governor, it could also be the kick down linkage is not adjusted right. If it only does this when it's cold, I would be leaning toward the gov. You might get it to free up with just some clean fluid but it may require being removed and replaced.

When a vehicle have to achive a high RPM to shift this is a sign that the transmission is having a problem and not shifting properly, is it starting at 2nd or 3rd gear, can you tell? I recently had a transmission and the 2nd gear was bad, once the Mechanic broke down the transmission the whole thing needed rebuilding, so you may want to take it to a shop, and make sure the Test drive, and diagnostic check will be free if the repairs are done by the same shop, otherwise you will have to pay if you decide to go somewhere else.

Check the trans fluid level first. To do this have the car running at operating temp check the level if low adjust to proper level and recheck. If thats not it I will help u trouble shoot it further. Sounds like a bad torque converter.

Have a code check done and see if speed sensor or controller is working properly. if bought from a dealer, get it back there asap...they can't sell it in that condition!!...No test drive before you ploped down your money?

kick down cable maybe time to service test it! hop in car do not start just push gas pedal to floor if it stops half way and is stiff as can be ""kick down cable"""service it

check your anti freeze and watch your temp gauge.any check engine light on.
