Toshiba M70 Lens adapter

By kcw573 - usenet poster

So far, I'm very pleased with my Toshiba PDR-M70, the amount of composition
control it gives me, and the quality of the images it produces.
Unfortunately, it's not an SLR, hence I'm finding the inability to attach
filters, or change lenses to be bothersome. My favorite subject is the great
outdoors, therefore I'm very much in need of the ability to use polarizing
and haze filters, as well as try and protect the lens from dirt etc.

Has anybody had any experience with either the Tiffen, or Toshiba lens
adapters? Do they interfere in any way with the lens at wide-angle settings?
Any recommendations on where to purchase?

Additionally, has anyone got any input regarding telephoto adapters? Are
they worth the trouble, or do they add too much distortion to the picture.

Thanks for any info you may have

Jeff

I've been using the adapter,uv,and cir. pol. from Photo
Ally(Tiffen) and no problems. See
http://www.mtholyoke.edu/~dwil ga/photos/camera/
for a good example of the wide angle and telephoto lens.
with a description of each.
I also like the M70 very much. ZDnet was extremely irresponsible
when they said that they would not recommend it.
yet, all other reviews and user comments have been very positive.

Thanks, That's very much the sort of information I was looking for. Looks
like I'll put the goodies on order and try them myself. I was a bit
concerned because I had tried a telephoto converter on a camcorder once, and
found it focused sharply, but added so much distortion as to be un-usable.

As to ZDnet's review, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume
they did an honest and objective evaluation based on the equipment they had
in front of them. I did download several of their test shots and have to
admit that the ones they took with the M70 were awful. The white balance was
off, the focus appeared to be off, and the picture needed work in color
saturation, contrast, and exposure levels. I also noticed that the cameras
software version was v1.05. I've never tried that version, so I don't know
if it had that sort of problems.

Regarding ZDnets overall evaluations, I'm not too sure I would agree
completely with what they did and didn't describe as "Good". Some of the
images they really liked, I thought were overexposed, too color saturated,
and showed signs of too much "in camera" processing. Picture quality though
really is in the eye of the observer.

Thanks again

Jeff

I am using the Toshiba 52mm adaptor.  It does not interfere the lens at all
and I had good results with different filters.
However,  there are some draw backs.
In wide angle setting, you can see the adaptor through the view finder.  It
blocks the very lower part of the view.  If you use the LCD screen, it is
ok.
With the adaptor, flash output is decreased because the adaptor does reflect
some light back to the sensor.

I would recommend the Tiffen.  It is only 43mm and should solve problem no.
1 and decrease effect of problem no. 2.
I had choosen the 52mm adaptor just because I have a lot of 62mm filters and
am using them with a step up ring.  (which made the above 2 problems even
worse).

Biu.

i'm using the adapter with filters, zoom lens and wide angle lens - i'm not a professional, but
have been very happy with the whole package.  can't remember the name of the vendor - it was
from the link at the toshiba web site - dc photo, maybe.
the only interference is with the flash because of the size of the wide and zoom lens.  the
adapter and filters alone work fine with the flash if need be.

good luck!
