just inherited an aspen desktop from engineering, and i've been looking but
haven't found anybody mentioning if they can get vms to run on this box. i
believe linux would work and plan to try it, but would appreciate knowing if
vms would boot also. i would like to try some 7.2 features on it prior to
upgrading my production system.
thanks

box has the intraserver scsi card ??
( i have an adaptec 2940 laying around i can try if this is no good.)
and a number 9 s3 variation vid card
was running nt, but has proved to be at the end
of it's useful life. hope the 64 bit operating systems
will extend our cost in these boxes.
hope to run linux as a print server for the
model shop when i'm done testing, but
would also like 7.2.x to work.
think compaq would have any heartburn if i got a
hobby license to see if it would fire up before
being honest and getting a real license if i use it
for work ?

I have VMS V6.2 running on an aspen alpine 275XS, but have not
tried updating to VMS 7.2. In my system, I have PROM version
X4.4-4165 Oct 3 1995 9:45:57; an SMC EtherPower 10/100 Fast
Ethernet PCI adapter; and a ZLXp PCI Graphics board. I am not
sure about the SCSI.
I would be interested in hearing of your experience if you try
it with V7.2.

I've got exactly the same configuration (Durango II) and also have had good
luck installing V7.2 on it. However, I cannot say the same for V7.1 as the
CD boot process blows up shortly after the "OpenVMS Alpha Version V7.1"
message with some barf about device not in the config tables (I'm not at the
office at the moment). I seem to recall that when we got this box, there
was a cover letter with a diskette containing a driver that was to be
installed in SYS$LOADABLE_IMAGES to fix this very problem. It seems that
V7.2 has the appropriate support built in. Something about the
SYS$PKWDRIVER.EXE "IntraServer" it seems to me. Anyways, I've tried the
"dual device boot" technique of
boot -fl 0,80000 dka600,dva0
in the hope that the V7.1 CD would prompt for the SYS$PKWDRIVER.EXE from the
floppy (which it does) but bugchecks shortly thereafter.
If anybody knows the magic spell to get V7.1 loaded on this configuration,
I'd appreciate it.

A rather interesting "feature" of this box is that is tends to lock up
completely when doing large amounts of I/O. And I mean COMPLETELY - no
amount of CTRL/C or CTRL/Y or even CTRL/P for that matter will save it,
doesn't even bugcheck. The only fix is a hard reset. I know that this is
not OpenVMS doing this but likely the 3rd party SCSI driver. Anybody else
see this behavior?

On Mon, 15 Nov 1999 15:58:18 -0700, "mike menard"
well, I have a Durango 500 II, (circ 1997) that
works fine w/ v7.2
the most important part is obviously
a supported disk controller.
if you're not going to do X, the graphics card would
be less a concern also.
