when my work laptop is connected directly to my home DSL Modem, I can connect to my employer's network using Cisco VPN Client. When the laptop is linked to my home USR5461 either wireless or wired, I can connect to internet but cannot connect to employer network using Cisco VPN client. what can I do to remedy this issue?

solved the problem. Had to set DSL modem to bridge mode and then set the router PPoE, provide ISP name and password information and bingo! works!!

is it possible that DSL router needs you to add the rmote network to your trusted networks?

login to the router and check these things
IPSec Passthrough: Enable Disable PPTP Passthrough: Enable Disable L2TP Passthrough: Enable Disable
IPSec Passthrough: Enable Disable PPTP Passthrough: Enable Disable L2TP Passthrough: Enable Disable
