Unable to get 1280x1024 res after xp install on a P4 machine.

Hi there, i'm not sure how or where to install necessary drivers for the monitor to be able to get 1280x1024. have downloaded a lot of drivers as i dont have any discs for this older machine. Do i need a graphics card for this?, as there isn't one installed.

Thanks for quick reply. Already tried that. I get a black screen with a message saying that it is unable to use this setting. I tried to install the driver for the monitor(dell lcd) but no difference. So i tried MB drivers but i'm not sure how to install drivers that have been downloaded.

HOW DO I FIX MY SCREEN RESOLUTION FROM CHANGING FROM 1280X1024 TO 640X480

JFrank,

Your monitor needs to be a high resolution monitor which supports 1280X1024. If is not then this is why your monitor keeps going back to 640x480. If it is a hi res monitor then you may need to update your drivers. If it is a Windows machines simply click the task bar>>control panel>>enter "Windows Update" in search box then click it and your drivers will be updated

I have installed viewsonic va1716w monitor using windows xp. I am unable to set its resolution to 1440X900. from display properties it going from 1024X768 to 1280X1024

It is possible that the video driver cannot support 1440X900 resolution.
Try installing the latest video driver and then try the higher screen resolution.

Re-loaded my xp os, can't get my monitor back to 1280x1024, can't seem to find a driver on line... also have lost my speakers somehow?

You need to install the correct video card driver and sound card driver when you reinstall the XP, it is using Microsoft generic vidoe card driver right now, and it did not install the sound card driver either.

Al1716 monitor plugged unable to change resolution.

You need to set the PC resolution to the native resolution of this ACER monitor, which is 1280x1024 @ 60Hz.

Resolution 1280x1024 is missing.

Sounds like you have either a generic/basic driver, or none at all.

Reinstall your nvidia drivers, make sure to download the newest from nvidias website. Before you install, go to add/remove programs and remove any nvidia related software, otherwise the new driver installation will do you know good. And for future reference, every time you update your video drivers, you need to uninstall the old ones.

Can't drive monitor

Try moving the monitor down to a lower res. I would try 640 x 480 first and then go up from there. Also, some adustments may be required in displays for the second monitor....

I have an error message on my screen which ios moving around. It says - 'not optimum mode. Recommended mode : 1280 x1024 60Hz'.

Sounds like you have an LCD monitor. LCD monitors look best in their native resolution. Yours must be 1280x1024. You need to (assuming this is a Windows PC) right click on the desktop and choose Personalize, Display Settings (Vista) or Properties, Settings (XP or older). Set the slider to 1280x1024. It'll confirm the change and then the message should never reappear.
