What is causing my explorer to **** & clunk with a loud grinding or rubbing noise when i turn corners?

When I turn a corner my explorer jerks and clunks and also makes a loud grinding or rubbing noise.

  • Anonymous Mar 07, 2014

Not sure but with my experience with mine, I would guess that it could be the bearings. Is the noises coming from the front end or theback?

  • EZClip Brackets Mar 07, 2014

I'm not a mechanic, but It could also be the CV joint. As a side note I had a similar issue with my 2000 Explorer. All I was ever told was that it was bushings in the suspension that were making the noise.

Although it may sound like it is the front, a rubbing noise can be caused by problems in the rearend/ differential.

Sounds like you have either ball joint issues, or problems with the CV joints. The other possibility is a problem in the transfer case causing the front axle to bind. You can physically look at the CV joint boots to see if they are torn open and many times you can grab onto the axle and give it a good tug to see if it will move..it should not.

SOURCE: I've replaced upper ball joint both, cv axles both. And my expedition still clunks and jerks when I turn corners. Why?

We can't guess for you

The bottom ball joints usually go on those vehicles

Can't the shop that did the work tell you why?

Your not replacing worn parts obviously

Any experienced person to road test & inspect
under it, can resolve that problem

Abs light on/grinding and clunking in turns on front left side of 2003 ford explorer

Sounds like left front loose wheel bearing knocking ABS sensor out of range causing ABS light to come on and causing grind noise at same location. Grinding noise is probably rotor rubbing on calipar.

Loud scraping noise when turning corner or backing up

The scraping noise may be a "tire rub," where one or both front tires are rubbing the wheel
wells during a turn (going forward or backing up).
Cause: possible ties size may be a little larger than the tires specified by Dodge for the vehicle.
Check: the driver's door panel, which will show manufacturer-recommended tire sizes and inflation pressures.

Rubbing/grinding noise

Usually the strut bearing will make this noise upon turning a corner and hitting a rut or pot hole when turning. A wheel bearing will make a low pitched whinning sound constantly

2006 ford escape - abs and 4wd lights on yesterday - off today - brakes checked - ok - right turn makes grinding noise with slight application of brake -

the grinding nose you heard was something rubbing on the rotor, bad brakes, caliper, after market wheels, etc. the pressure of a turn bends something enough to touch, this is produceing metal flake that attached to the magnetic sensor on the abs sending a light on because it couldn't read the tire position as it turned, it may have got blown off, washed off, but when it can read the tire again the light will go off, i would look into the grinding noise on cornering thats the cause of the problem. hope this helps
