tried to open up and re-install the black cartridge but the toners are way over the the left and won't let me move them back to the center where I can work with them.

Thecartriges run on a steel shaft and respond to resistence. Take a kleenex and clean th shaft. Then lubricate it with WD40 or some other lubricant. The 0502 error will go away. The Clay Works georgepcd@comcast.net

Wipe the silver bar down w/alcohol! It worked for me; slides just like it is supposed to. It was icky! Also, when the printer doesn't detect the cartridge, it maybe the cartridge is defective, even if it is new. I had that w/my lexmark, which is much the same. I checked it w/an old cartridge & it did acknowledge it. So, another trip to Walmart, & it was all good. Just a bad cartridge....

I tried "cleaning the ink cartridge nozzles". Press Options until Cartridges displays > Press + until Clean displays> Press Select. I had to do it twice. Then I took a soft wet rag and ran it across the metal bar that the cartridges slide on. So far it has worked.

Lexmark printers with "Hardware Error 0502? Published on February 11, 2006 in hardware. 252 Comments Tags: 0502, error, fix, hardware, lexmark, printer. Good tip for the Lexmark All-in-one inkjet printer owners (mine is the X6170):
98393867_e286ea59ca_t.jpgAfter some months of use, your printer might get the habit of stopping in the middle of a page and showing "Hardware Error 0502" on the LCD display. If you leave the printer alone for a while, it might start printing again. Then again, it might not. Pretty annoying.
The Lexmark support site will let you power off, remove the power cord for 30 seconds (!!), take out the cartridges and fiddle with some encoder strip. This whole procedure might take you up to 30 minutes and it will not help (been there, done that).
The real answer is given by a person called 'clem':
98393885_c4f82c99a9_m.jpgHardware Error: 0502.
On the multi function machine seems to be a coating on the metal rod that the cartridges travel on. Just wipe this rod with a kleenex and the problem seems to go away. Somehow it presents a drag on the cartridges and causes an error.

This works! Clean the ****** with a paper towel (another page talks about re-lubricating the thing, but that was not necessary in my case). The towel will be black (ink residu, presumably), but there you go printing to your heart's desire again

Printer displays hardware error 0502 wont print " HELP "

The 0502 error can have any of four possible causes:
- A faulty black/photo cartridge
- A faulty color photo cartridge
- A dirty encoder strip
- The encoder strip being out of position
.... most of the time, it's the encoder strip that is giving the problem..

Dell Printer A940 Hardware error

Error 0502-Carrier Stall indicates a physically blocked carrier. This condition can occur for many possible reasons. Most often, the carrier is blocked because the ink cartridge lids are open while the printer is on (Figure 1).

carrierstall.jpg
Figure 1: Open Ink Cartridge Lids
» Reseat the Ink Cartridges and Make Sure the Lids Are in Place
  1. Make sure the printer is turned on.

  2. Lift the printer's front cover.

new_note.jpg Note: The ink cartridge should be in the up/loading position unless the printer is busy.
  1. Squeeze the tabs on the cartridge lids and lift the cartridge lids up. The cartridge pops up when the lid is fully lifted.

  2. Remove the cartridges.

  3. Make sure that all of the protective tape has been removed from the contacts on the ink cartridge.

  4. Replace the cartridges.

  5. Snap the lids closed.

  6. Close the printer's front cover.

  7. When prompted on the printer's LCD to choose New or Old, choose Old.

  8. Press Select.

» Reposition the Encoder Strip
  1. Remove the power cord from the printer.

  2. Lift the scanner unit to expose the inside, where the printer cartridges are located.

  3. Gently slide the ink cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer.

  4. Gently move the top part of the printer belt to the right.

  5. Using an index finger, gently push encoder strip (Figure 1) down and then back up, to get it back into the slot located on the back of the ink cartridge carrier.

Figure 1: Inkjet Printer Encoder Strip

  6. Gently press the strip first to the rear, and then forward, to ensure that it is seated correctly.

  7. Manually move the ink cartridge carrier to the left, then to the right, to check the positioning of the encoder strip.

  8. Once the encoder strip has been re-seated, close the scanner lid.

  9. Re-connect the power cord to the printer.
