Lincoln Navigator key fob and garage door opener quit working

My 1998 Lincoln Navigator key fob and built in garage door opener quit working. Both key fobs quit working at the same time. Tried replacing battery and still not working. Just went dead. Wouldn't be a huge deal, but the key is old and a little worn down, so it isn't the easiest thing to unlock the doors. Not sure if there is a relay or fuse that is dead. Couldn't find one, but not sure which one it could be, or if that is the problem to begin with. Any help appreciated.

To decrease the risk of serious injury or death, do not use the universal transmitter with a door opening system that lacks stop and reverse features as required by federal standards. This includes any garage door opening system manufactured before April 1, 1982.
ani_caut.gif CAUTION: During this procedure, the system that you are programming will be made to operate. Make sure that people or objects are clear of the garage door or gate being programmed.

  1. Select a universal transmitter button to train.
  1. NOTE: If more than one button is pressed, priority will be given to the lowest numbered channel.
Press and continuously hold the button for 20 seconds. CHANNEL X TRANSMIT will be displayed (X will be 1, 2 or 3) during this time.

After 20 seconds, the display will read CHANNEL X TRAINING to indicate training has started.
  1. Point the original garage door opener transmitter at the overhead console. Hold down the original transmitter's transmit button so the overhead console can learn the original transmitter's frequency and data stream.
  1. Training will be completed in 100 seconds or less. CHANNEL X TRAINED will be displayed when training is complete. DID NOT TRAIN will be displayed if the channel did not correctly train.
  1. NOTE: Additional training may be required for rolling code equipped devices. For additional information, refer to Rolling Code Programming in this section.
Release the channel X button. Training is complete.

  1. Press and release the learn or smart button on the garage door motor head unit.
  1. NOTE: Following the previous step, there are 30 seconds in which to proceed.
Press and release the programmed universal transmitter button. Press and release the universal transmitter button a second time to complete the training process. (some garage door openers may require this procedure to be done a third time to complete the training.)

  1. Release the button.
Erase Mode
  1. Simultaneously press and hold buttons 1 and 3 for 20 seconds.

How to you program the remote fob on a 1998 lincoln navigator

Put the key into the ignition, turn to accessories & back ( about 7 times) until the locks go up and down on their own,
then press the buttons on both of the key fobs.
Then remove the key.

They should both be working and by removing the key from the ignition, you will have closed the program cycle which then is complete.
