I recently bought a used 2007 outlander, since buying it, I have started to hear a knocking noise when making a sharp turn, the dealership says its the traction control, but this happens even on dry gound, but it mostly happens when it is below freezing temperatures, I initially heard it during a cold snap, then it went away when the temep got warmer, then started hearing it again during another cold snap, its a loud knocking noise that only happens when making a sharp turn and accelerating at the same time, doesn't happen if I turn and brake... Any ideas?
It sounds like one of your CV (constant-velocity) joints is going bad. This is common on front wheel drive vehicles. The CV joint allows the drive axle to pivot as you turn the wheels. Over time the protective boots crack, the grease leaks out and you end up with the knocking noise you describe when turning while accelerating. The dealership should easily be able to inspect the CV joint boot and diagnose the CV joint.
Testimonial: "Thank you for your help... I will most likely go to another mechanic as the dealership has been very difficult to deal with, from telling me nothing is wrong when something is clearly wrong, to not fixing things properly and taking 2-4 visits to fix the same problem!!! Thank you for your help!!"
I was wondering, how how long is too long to wait to get that fixed, just because now that we have a warm spell again, its stopped making the noise, even if I try to make it happen... Seems really odd... if I dont fix this, wills omething else break?
I would think you would be Ok for a few thousand miles. CV joints don't usually come apart, but if it does then the axle shaft will be banging around the underside of the car and can damage something else (possibly the steering linkage), not to mention once you come to a stop you won't be able to move the car under it's own power again until it's fixed.
I have an 07 Outlander and have had similar problems.... this was a common issue on the 07 and a TSB was issued - the cause was the wheel bearings. I had mine replaced and the sound went away, but that did not seem to be the end of my problem. See my question and answer here:http://www.fixya.com/cars/t23704444-fron...

SOURCE: High Pitched noise
I had a high pitch noise, didn't sound like it came from the "underside". Turns out it was one of fans that had little chips in the blades? My Audi dealer replaced it, and it's fine now.
SOURCE: 2009 Hyundai Accent starter motor doesn't turn off
Sounds like the solenoid. You know you have Roadside Assistance with your new Hyundai. Have it towed in and get it diagnosed & repaired under warranty.
SOURCE: knocking noise when i accelerate
CHECK ALL DRIVE BELT ACCESSORIES LIKE ALTERNATOR - AIR CONDITIONER COMPRESSOR AND CRANKSHAFT PULLEY.I HAVE SEEN A LOOSE OR BAD TRANSMISSION MOUNT CAUSE KNOCKING NOISE IF ENGINE ACCELERATED.
SOURCE: I have a 97 Ford
could be a rod bearing going bad.or could be bad gas causing it to spark knock realy bad. try to put some 93 octane in and see if it goes away.
