My camera is quite new, only a couple of months old and I have been downloading photos onto my computer. But,for the last couple of days, I have found that my computer is not 'recognising' the connection. Nor can I recharge the camera. Might there be something wrong with the USB connector making connection with the camera?

To make it possible, to point out where the problem is, you could try some rings.
Try to charge the camera with an external power supply. If you have it, the F-2AC from Olympus.
If that also does not charge, you could try to replace the USB cable.
But if the camera starts charging, you have to look for the USB connector in the computer. Be aware, in some computers the power, delivered from a USB connector, should be capable of giving 5 volt and 500 mA. Sometimes internally the computer is not correct wired, and won't give the 5 volt at all. Special when you hav build the computer yourself, you can check inside the computer. BUT ONLY when is sure the camera can charge via an external USB charger.

Then you could check if nothing is wrong in the camera. All contacts, on battery and in the camera, should be clean and shiny. You could clean contacts with a dry cloth. Never use sharp tools.
Also check the USB connector on the camera, if no debris is in the connector, or no contact is bent or has corrosion on it.

Success

Testimonial: "very good information but it is definately a problem with the USB connector on the camera. If a contact is bent or has corrosion, what do I do?"

SOURCE: No usb port found

I also have a problem tranferring from my Olympus digital camera. I hope some one will be able to help. I am working on Windows XP SP1. When I first tried to transfer pictures from my Olympus when the computer was new,the pictures transferred through the USB port with no problem. I then added a printer to the USB port and worked fine. I added a Zip drive to the other USB Port and that also worked fine. When I went to transfer pictures again, I had to disconnect the Zip drive from the usb port and connect the camera to the port. It would not work. I checked device manager and it did not list the camera in that port but the Zip drive, even though I had disconnected the device. I restarted the computer with the camera connected to the USB port and still it did not work. Device Manager still listed the Zip drive in that USB Port. The transfer worked fine before I used the USB ports. It seems that it always recognizes the Zip Drive and not the camera. The Camera and drivers are listed in device manager but not in the USB Port. Anyone, please help.

SOURCE: Computer won't recognise camera to download images

** Problem Solved **

I found it wasn't the camera entirely to blame. I tried another USB cable on another pc, and although the camera was doing the same thing as my problem, the computer recognised the camera as new hardware, and asked me how to access the pictures. So I was able to get the pictures from the camera to the computer, and then saved them on to my Kingston flash drive. So taking the flash drive to my daily PC, I plugged in my flash drive via a USB extension lead, and discovered that would read either... alarm bells rang. So I unplugged the lead, and put the flash drive straight into the computer direct. The computer recognised it immediately. So plugging in the extension lead again, and the flash drive, it read this now. So I tried the camera, and it recognised it.

So I don't know exactly what the problem was, but it was solved... saved me a lot of running around and money ;)

SOURCE: Vista not recognising Olympus camera on USB connection

I just spoke to Olympus Tech Support.

You have to download Olympus Master 2. (Their program is no longer called Camedia Master.)

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/oima_softwareMaster.asp

At their main site, search for olympus master 2.

How can i fix my OLYMPUS 170 DIGICAM. It won't open and won't work also

See page 12. Using the computer it can take up to 10 hours to charge. I would remove the battery and charge in a separate charger. The Olympus cameras have been exceptionable for me. In the over 110K photos I have taken with mind I have gone through several batteries.

http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/oima_cckb/VG-170_MANUAL_EN.pdf

Caution it suggests not taking pictures with the AC adapter connected. However it says you can review.

Hope this has helped?

Be sure you did not correct your exposure compensation.
Try to switch to automatic. See page 29 of the manual for how to set exposure compensation.

How do i transfer photos that i have put onto computer, back onto camera which has got a new memory stick, so theres no photos on

Using a computer to put pictures back onto a memory card that will be used in a camera is not a recommended procedure. In most cases, it will corrupt the camera. In some cases it works. Do you really want to take the chance?

Is there any sofware i can download to put photos from my olympus vg-120 o the computer because my set up disc is not working

You don't need any special software.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program, such as iPhoto on Mac or Windows Photo Gallery on Windows.

Vista based computer does'nt read the usb port

The software that originally came with the camera is not Vista compatible. Go to www.olympusamerica.com and click the link for software downloads and then click the link for the free download of Olympus Master 2. This is the software that is now compatibel to Windows Vista.
