Battery is u/s so run it with charger connected. Now it won't operate/charge when I open the screen more than about 3 inches. The charge light goes off and the battery dies in minutes.

If the system will not power on, and the LED on the AC adapter goes out when plugged into the system, then the most likely senario is the motherboard has failed. Remove the battery, Wireless card, Drives, RAM and connect the AC adapter see if anything changes. If no change, the MB is most likely bad.

All rechargeable batteries have a limited life, and as they age their charge capacity reduces over time and you get shorter and shorter time between charges.
Recharage batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and batteries over 2 years old are considered nearly worn out. Worn out batteries won't charge up at all.

Hello there:
try removing the battery from the computer and turning on the computer to see if the power cord works correctly if it does inspect the battery and clean the terminals on the battery and computer and put the battery back in while it is still on now you should see the battery show up on the taskbar if not right click anywhere on the desktop and go to properties and than go to than go to screensaver than look towards the bottom and you will see power click on it and you should see the options for the battery ok sorry this was so long but i needed to explain it in full
please dont forget to rate this

well either you have a bad battery, or a bad charger, or your ACPI settings are not correct in BIOS, you must check each one, First you must check the Power Adapter, usually with a multimeter set to Volts DC and see if it the same as what is written on power supply, Next check the batteries voltage with a meter and see if that is OK, really the only real way is to substitute the battery, and expensive guess? Also as said check your ACPI settings are OK in BIOS and Windows power settings too. Use your manual for reference.

Sounds like you need to calibrate the battery, it is supposed to be done every 3 months. If it is not done, your battery will display the same symptoms are you describe. Yes, this holds true for adding a new battery also.
Here is HP's instructions on how to do it. You want to scroll down to the section called "Calibrate the notebook PC battery".

It will run without the battery in but only if the screen is open by about 3 inches. As soon as it is moved further the light goes off. I think there must be a contact in the rolling joint where the charger plug fits in. I believe that if the contact is there then it is a bad contact causing this. Would spraying a contact cleaner into the join possibly work? I have no idea of the sort of contact set up in a laptop for the charger.
It may be the cable from the motherboard to the display, hook up an external monitor to see it stays on
Hi Brad. Thanks for your help. I'm sure it is the power supply. With or without the battery the screen stays on. Actually, I think I'm confusing the issue here. The computer actually turns off. When the lid (screen) is opened the power indicator goes off and then the battery drains very fast. The fast drain is definitely the battery's age and condition. That's on order now. However without the battery and using the charger as it's only source of power if I move the screen the outer blue ring which indicates power goes off and the computer immediately goes off.
