Turned it on, smelled something burning only to discover that the part of the lamp that hooks into the projector has melted everything, so now no lamp will fit (it's pretty obvious that it's busted).

I had gone out of town for a few days and it worked perfectly until then... the bulb was about six weeks old at the time and I have roommates so the projector wasn't exactly sitting alone for three days. The plastic where the lamp is supposed to hook in/connect is completely melted, so I would need a new part altogether (if it's cheaper than buying another). Is it possible that there is further damage that I can't see?

The standard housing is high temperature resistance. it will not be melted .
your lamp housing was melted, means that the lamp and the housing is a inferior one, the quality is not good. It will damage your projector .

Pls purchase a new one ,a good quality lamp +housing

SOURCE: NEC LT240 has Power, Status & Lamp indicators lit & wont turn on!

If your bulb finally reaches it's end before you have the chance to replace it you unit will shut itself down and go into a permanent standby mode. Changing the bulb alone will not remedy the issue. The solution is quite simple but not posted in the manual or anywhere else that I could find for that matter! All that is required is to hold down the HELP button on your remote for 10 seconds while aiming at the infrared sensor on the unit. This will reset the units bulb timer and remove it from the standby mode.

SOURCE: I replaced the bulb in my projector and now it

You need to hold the help button on the remote control for ten seconds, that should reset the lamp hour. NEC decided to make it inoperable after 2100 hours on the bulb.

SOURCE: I have a NEC VT700

I have solved that problems by replacing the plastic Lamp Cover. NEC says they wear out over the years due to the heat. If you have a spare VT700 about, swap covers and see if that works. or order one from NEC, thay cost 5 dollars.

SOURCE: When power button is turned on it has a orange

The bulb is not lighting.
Make sure the covers are going on correctly if I remember this one has an inner cover as well.
There is a little micro switch that needs to be operated by cover going on correctly.
also check the plugs / connectors are ok.

should have unplugged it when you noticed the smell.

UNPLUG and remove and look at lamp you installed--is something in the housing where lamp goes melted? I hope you did not touch the face of the bulb with your hand or fingers.

What ever is wrong find it before trying to use set again.

I turned on my tv this morning and it started smoking and of course smelling like something inside was burning. We took off the back and can see nothing that looks burnt or melted but the tv still wont...

hi,
may be ur tvs lamp side have some problem. may be the lamp over heated and burned. just open its lamp cover ann check it.
also check its power supply input point(near fuse) there is an MOV (used for voltage surge protection) is burned or not. if there is any voltage surge it will get shorted and the fuse will blow off, protect the power supply for any further damage. check the fuse also. if found open then check the MOV. insert fuse only after replacing the MOV.

Projector has seemed to loose its brightness. Turned brightness all o the way up.

This happened to me also. I thought the lamp was "burning out". What had happened was that the reflective material behind the lamp had basically melted away, that's why it still works, but looks very dim. Replace the lamp/cage.

Panasonic pt-l780u projector lamp warning light comes on and lamp goes out. smell somthing burning. this is with three lamps. i am sure it's not the lamp.

the burning could be the dust on the inside burning off. blow the dust out with canned air. then check to see if the fans are spinning. after that, it's the ballast/power supply.

Panasonic PTAE 900U with new lamp and counter reset shut off

Reseat the lamp.  I had a similar problem.  Replaced the lamp and everything worked for about 3 hours.  Then, turned the projector off.  Next morning, when I turned it on, nothing.  Stanby/On light flashed green for a minute then the lamp light came on and the projector went into standby.

Projector problem

I have a great deal of experience with that projector in particular.
The burning smell along with the circle on the screen can be one of two thing in the same general area. Both are not good.
The lamp assembly has its own dedicated cooling fans. these fans can sometimes **** in dust and insects. the lamp runs at a very high temperature and can burn those things quickly. I have often found old lamps with particles fused to the glass.
The other situation is that the lamp burned something and it got stuck to the glass somewhere in the light path.
if I remember right the projector monitors the temprature of the bulb and will shutdown if it gets too hot.
Runco is based in california and has a great turn around time on projectors. Unfortunately with Runco you would be hard pressed to find a technician that wouldn't just send it to them for repairs anyways. The major down side with Runco is that customers cannot talk directly to engineers or service men.
Locate a Runco authorized retailer in your area, check runcoes site. and give them a call to see if they cant send it to runco for you. if you cannot find one in your area call Roscor or Blair & Associates in Chicago.
