Bernina 200 e freezing

Make sure to install a brand new needle. Sometimes a damaged needle will not connect on a zig-zag stitch.

I have a 930 Record that has to be oiled frequently. Don't know if that's the case for your 1230. Some of the mechanisms hang up on the 930 if not lubed at least once a year. I use liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube, avlb at the hardware store or bike shop.

Be sure that you regularly clean and oil your Bernina. If not oiled regularly, the old oil turns to varnish and actually freezes the parts. Some people believe something is wrong with the motor or foot control, when really it just needs some TLC to keep it running smoothly.

May be one of several issues--depends on the model Bernina. Could be a problem with the foot control. I had to replace a carbon brush in the foot control of my 930. (A new foot control could cost over $160!)

Or some machines (mostly older models, ie 830 Records) have carbon brushes on the motor that wear with age. Once they've worn down, they no longer make constant contact giving you the "intermittent" issue. I've replaced carbon brushes on some older Berninas--usually found somewhere around the motor (look for a screw or knob on the motor). You can buy replacements a lot of places. I've purchased them on eBay.

Have you ever lubricated it? Sewing machines must be periodically cleaned and lubricated or they will get stuck and freeze up

A 200e that locks up usually need a memory and a firmware upgrade. The original 200's only have 32mb of internal memory. The upgraded mini print board that is used in the 730 has 64mb of memory. This 64mb board was used in the 200 as a upgrade and this stopped the lock up problem. Also over the years Bernina has improved the firmware and this also cures the lock up problem. The latest and probably last firmware version for the 200e is version 5, also called the cutwork version. The easiest thing for you to do would be to take your 200 to a dealer and have them install a 64mb mini print board and also upgrade your machines firmware to the latest version 5. Also if you have loaded embroidery designs in your machine, remove them as they use up the machines memory. When you get too many designs loaded even if you have a 64 MB board in your machine you can still have lockup problems.

Sometimes the touch screens can get accidentally re-calibrated incorrectly, and then will not work. It could also be a electrical defect, though this is rare with BERNINA products. I would recommend taking your machine back to the store that you bought it from to have it repaired. BERNINA machines come with a 5 year electronics warranty in the United States, so if it does happen to be an electrical defect, as long as your registered your warranty, this should be covered. If it is anything else, a BERNINA dealer should be able to re-calibrate or repair it fairly easily.

I hope you did not pay for it ! IAs a Techie, it is our responsibility to correctly diagnose. If he wasn't sure, it should have been sent to Bernina where it would be fixed!

Sounds like the machine needs oiling. Get the proper oil from a sewing shop (not a department store) and put a drop of oil on every metal-on-metal moving part you can find.

Ask them to replace the I/O print and make sure its upgraded to the latest firmware, also have them check or replace the motor depending on when you bought your machine these could be under warranty.
