Re: smudging when printing photos, but not colour...
(1) Most photopaper is made to be printed on one side only. Check to see that you are printing on the correct side.
(2) You mention new cartridges. Are they the same brand as cartridges you've used before? If they're a different brand, you may want to try whatever worked before.

Could be the print job you send to the printer is set up to print in black and white.
Or the cartridges are full and the nozzles from the printhead are blocked.
Run a cleaning cycle on the printer. If some colour appears continue till all colours are back for all nozzles.
If you did not use he printer for a long time, remove the cartridges one by one and put a drop of cleaning fluid in the pipes in the cartridge holder (where the ink goes in) tun replace the cartridge and print one or two full sized colour photos, till all colours are back.
Check under the cartridge holder. Sometimes fluff causes a ink buildup ink catridge and the cartridge holder. Clean under the cartridges and the cartridge holder
Very likely ink is not flowing well at the cartridge nuzzles. Ink must flow well to have a solid print.
Try this:- Bring out the ink cartridges. Get a well folded tissue paper, and press the ink cartridge nuzzle to it firmly. You should have a good blot of ink (solid line) on the tissue.
If you do not get a good blot of ink, know that this is the cause of the problem.
If however you get a good blot, try the next procedure:- Soak your tissue in some methylated spirit and clean the contact panel of the ink cartridge, do same to the area it makes contact with the print head inside the printer. Then try to print again.
This may be the cartridge itself, take the black ink cartridge out and check the head on it (the part that points in to the printer, usually down) and see if it is dirty or has ink smudges on it.
Are you using Name brand ,new ink cartridges?
Take the color cartridges out and make sure you removed the tape from the bottom of those cartridges. if done already take a wet paper towel and squeeze out the excess water, then lay the damp paper towel folded in half on a flat surface.
Then set the colored in cartridges one at a time with the ink side pressing against the damp paper towel for about 3 min. after 3 min you should see the ink drain on to the paper towel if so then replace the cartridge back into the printer and that should solve your problem.
yes you have to have both of them then everything should be fine.if you have the color cartridge that is empty put it in for now and see if it will work it will let u know that it is empty but at least you will be able to print in black
What colour are the smudges, if they are one colour you can try changing that colour toner cartridges. Failing this then it sounds as if you may need a new drum
its ok I solved it! I didn't realise that all the photo cartridge does is gloss over the colour picture produced by the colour cartridge. I simply had to replace the colour cartridge which had run out, so now its all working perfectly!!
