You have to remember to set the Jumpers on the drive to assigh it Master or Slave,  if this is not done it will conflict with the other drive on the IDE cable, (you would usually match the setting of the drive you removed)

This setting is assigned using a jumper on a block of six pins which is usually located next to the 40 pin IDE connector.

On my dell d600... my dr-rw is not working at all!!! Please help me??

First, go to control panel under windows xp or other, find device manager, uninstall current driver. Close window, reboot.
Windows will try to install a compatible driver and try the drive again.
If this doesn't work, try manually installing a reliable dvd or cdrom drive and test the port that this drive hooks into. If a known reliable drive does not work on this computer, then there is port damage (may be caused by a hidden virus or malicious software)
My relative has a similar problem and I can no longer play steady dvd movies on his d610 anymore.

My cdrom shows up in bios but not windows xp, also installed latest driver

Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.Select Manage, then when it opens, select Disk Management at the bottom. That will open with a list of all drives installed in your machine.See if your CD has a drive letter assigned to it.If not, right click on the CD and select Change letters and path. Select change and pick a letter for the drive.Save, apply, or ok that.Sorry, don't remember what the command is in XP.
Good or bad, please rate my post.
Thanks
Bob
IF that doesn't do it post back and we'll try again.

DVD ROM not working properly

right click on my computer --> manage --> disk management and check to see if it has a drive letter assigned ( you should be able to right click on it and assign a drive letter if it does not have one.

If not then look at my tip here

Recover from viral damage to IE, System Restore etc

First, the external drive. Sounds like the drive letter that is trying to be assigned to the external drive is already taken by something else. To resolve this, right click on My Computer and go to Manage. On the list, you will see disk management. You should see your external drive on the list to the right. Right click on the external drive and select Change Drive Letter. Change the drive letter to a letter that is not already being used by another device.

Second, if you are certain that the virus is completely removed, then it is possible to uninstall and reinstall IE, just make sure to download the install from Microsoft to your PC first before uninstalling. The install for IE 7 can be found here.

On the other hand, if you are not certain, then reformatting and reinstalling is not a bad idea at all. Not only will this most likely solve your problem, but it cleans up a lot of gunk on the PC as well. The only problem I see is if the virus is still infecting some of the files that you are going to restore. Just make sure you've ran a full scan on everything before proceeding.

Hope this helps!!

Vison Monitor ( device installer error)

First you need to uninstall the driver for your old monitor. Then install the driver for the new monitor. With both drivers installed your computer is confused and shows the conflict as an error message. Hope this helps.

XP won't recognize 2nd SATA drive and shows 1st SATA drive as drive F:

To get Windows to recognize the 2nd HDD, you have to initialize it in disk management.

http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/prepare_second_hdd/prepare_second_hdd1.shtml

As far as the drive letter for the OS install, that was caused by the HDD not having an existing partition and other drives in the system having one (Either USB Drive, Printer with a card reader, 2nd Internal HDD)

Here is a Microsoft article on how to change it, but you'll notice MS doesn't recommend you try it. (Personally, I can live with ah HDD with a drive letter other then C:, so can Windows.)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223188/en-us

In the future, when installing XP, boot to the CD, run the install to the point of formatting the hard drive. Once formatted, turn off the computer, reboot to the XP install again, the HDD will be assigned C:

As far as the drivers go, they needed to be installed in this order:
Desktop System Software
Chipset
Video
Audio
Network
Modem
