You have nothing to worry about as this is normal operations. All the computer is doing is checking drives and reading any disks that maybe in the drive. If there is no disk in the drive the LED indicator light will still come on but should resume Windows quicker.
HP Pavillion laptops and every others laptops do require CD/DVD recordable for backup not CD/DVD rewritable. Try to use a CD/DVD recordable to see what will happen first.
Could be one of two things: either the BIOS has lost the settings for the hard drive, which is uncommon unless the PC is more than 5 years old or been electrically shocked, or the hard drive is going bad.
hard drives usually only last about 3-5 years on average. Western Digital even less.
Can you get it to boot without the BSOD? If the problem is intermittent, it's probably a flaky drive sector. If Windows will boot, you should be able to get Norton to make a good copy.
If it will no longer boot, the sector is probably corrupted. You can tell Norton to do a sector copy & ignore errors, but that may duplicate the problem.
