If you have a complete External Media Bay drive (drive, case, cable), then you can plug the connector to the laptop or docking station, and turn the laptop on. The laptop will detect it automatically.

Hi i have this problem with my dell latitude d400,i did some installations some time ago and up till now i have not been able to use usb device on it,my external dock bay i cant use it neither so pls help...

Do you still have this problem if you boot into safe mode? If not, then there is a problem with one of your programs interfering with usb drivers.
If it does still happen in safe mode, then you may need to re-install your drivers. To do this, boot up normally, go to Start/control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. Find your USB section, and right-click the USB Root hubs, and uninstall them. Then reboot, and windows will then detect the usb ports, and reinstall the necessary drivers for proper operation.
Hope that helps.
Cheers from NZ

Can't get new DVD RW to work

Go to the Manufacturer's site of the burner and look for firmware, download and install -and to make sure it (the burner) is compatible with you operating system vista or XP
You should have received a disc with the burner ...run it, even if you are going to use some other burner program.
If you can't find what you need, write again with the name and model of burner and the operating system you are using.
Hope this helps... Please leave rating...

I recently bought an external cd rom drive and keep getting power surge message when connected. Help, what am I doing wrong or have I bought the wrong drive!!!!!

make sure you have the latest BIOS version:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&deviceid=4252&libid=1&releaseid=R112427&vercnt=9&formatcnt=0&SystemID=LAT_PNT_P4_X300&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=-1&impid=-1

If you bought a D-Bay external drive, then you may need to run a firmware flash on it. The firmware for a D-Bay is found here:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R76969&SystemID=LAT_PNT_P4_X300&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=3060&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=2&libid=31&fileid=100938

If it is a 3rd party drive, it should have it's own power source to power the drive.

If the drive functions, but you still get a USB error when the drive is attached, make sure that you have all WIndows updates installed and if the error still occurs, then try this:

solution for usb error when booting the computer.

Click on START Click on CONTROL PANEL Double-click on the SYSTEM icon Click on the HARDWARE tab Click the DEVICE MANAGER button Click the “+” next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the selection. Right-click and select PROPERTIES on the Intel® USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER (not the USB Root Hub) Click the ADVANCED Tab Check the box that says: “Don’t tell me about USB errors”

If you didn't get a D-Bay drive, you might try this one:

My dell d610 laptop has dvd/cd rw i want to know if this means i have dvd rw too if not what should i buy so that i will have dvd rw hopefully it will be something i just plug in this is my first computer...

Your built in CD Drive is a DVD player and regular CDR - CDRW burner, this means you cannot burn DVD's. To burn DVD's I would recommend you purchase an external DVD burner, here are some links to ones that are compatable to your computer.

Asus - Good Reviews

LITEON - Also has good Reviews

I want to upgrade from cd rw to dvd/cd rw

If you are looking to replace the internal drive, then as long as you purchase a drive with the same interface it will work. If you are looking for a USB external drive then any one will work.

The only thing Dell was correct with is it should have +/- signs.
