2000 Old Bravada - key won't come out

I have a 2000 Old Bravada. Every so often, 3 times today alone, when I stopped, put the shift into park, and tried to turn off the vehicle, the key wouldn't turn all the way back to come out. Typically, when I put the shift into park, I hear a metalic "click" in the steering column, and I can turn the key back and remove without incident. When I put it into park, and do not hear that sound, without fail, the key won't come out. Smetimes it can take up to 5-30 minutes of turning the wheel, and jiggling the key before it will turn back and come out. I have been given conflicting advice on what it is. One mechanic says it is the barrell and it needs to be replaced; one mechanic says it is a "spring" in the floor shifter keeping a plate from sensing the car is in park, so it won't release the key; and one other mechanic said the entire plate and cellinoid need to be replaced, at a cost of $900. The transmission is fine. how would I fix or bypass.

Thank you man. I'm tired of having pull the keys out of the ignition and unhook my battery.

Do you have a floor shift or column shift? I'll look up the wiring to tell you how to byapass it.

No the problem is likely the shift interlock solenoid on the shifter. But I'll look it up.

SOURCE: key won't come out of 2000 bravada

This is a floor shift? Have you noticed the transmission sticking in third? Do you feel you have the ability to take the shifter apart? It's a problem with the shift interlock solenoid. If the transmission is sticking in 3rd also it is a power supply to the solenoid from it ignition switch. If the transmission works fine I can tell you how to fix it or bypass it.

Ignition switch won't release key when it is put in park. But when I removed switch and key tumbler, the key tumbler/cylinder releases key. Why won't the key release when it is in park?

Most newer models have a safety feature called
shift interlock. This prevents the key from being turned back
to the lock position if you forget to place the gear selector in park.
Depending on the model,
If it uses a cable, it may be sticking or needs adjusting.
If it uses an electrical solenoid. may be blown fuse or park switch.
Tap, shake, and pull up on the shifter and make sure it's in park.
