Question about Canon PowerShot A540 Digital Camera

Camera won't turn on

I've had my canon powershot a540 for about a year. yesterday, i turned my camera on to take a picture. the first time i pressed the on button it didn't turn on, but i just pressed it again and held it down for a little bit longer and it turned on. i took a few pictures and then turned it off. i set it in my lap--there's no way it got stepped on or dropped, and about five minutes later i attempted to turn in on again. the camera turned on and the lens was in the process of coming out when all of a sudden it turned off. i thought it was perhaps the batteries even though they were new but i've switched to batteries three times and still no luck. the camera won't respond to anything. the really weird thing is that the lens is still about halfway out.
any suggestions? please?

My A540 will not turn on. I have put in new batteries, but still no luck.

I have had the camera for about a year and had no trouble with it until now.

Same problem. A540 is about a year old, was working fine, took some pictures, turned the camera off and now it won't turn on. Camera has not been dropped or damaged. Replaced the batteries. No luck. Replaced the small disk battery. Still no luck. We are attending a wedding this afternoon and are r-e-a-l-l-y bummed about this.

I have the same problem with mine- except i was in the middle of taking a picture and heard a loud pop- now it won't turn on and the lens is stuck in a outward position. the camera is just over a year old as we got it right beofre halloween last year. I called Canon and because I don't have my purchase recipet they will not take it in their repair shop for the warranty. Wierd thing is if you go on there is a warning for A540's about the battery cover getting hot causing issues- mine unforttunately does not have the right serial # for that problem.

One suggestion you may want to try is going to there was an issue posted there with Power Shot A540's involving the battery holder that causes similar issues to what you are describing- if your camera has the serial # starting with the #'s posted online they will repair your camera regardless of the warranty status.

Every time I turn on my Canon A540 Powershot I get the black date/time screen. The date/time is all zero (the photo properties default to 1 Jan 1980) and I have to either enter the date/time or press...

Inside the battery compartment, right beside the AA batteries, there's a tiny little door labeled CR1220 (see this picture). Pry the door open with your fingernail, remove the little button battery located there, and take this battery down to your local drugstore to buy a replacement camera clock battery. Remember, it's a "CR1220" battery. It should cost only about $4.

Powershot A540 flash does not work

Hi. I had the same problem. I called Canon and they told me to reset the camera, and it worked. The camera is back to normal. To reset, hit the "menu" button and then scroll over to the tab with the tools icon. Scroll down until you see "Reset All". Hit "set" then highlight OK and hit "set" again. It will say "busy" if it was reset correctly. I had to do it twice for it to work, but it seems to be working fine now. Hope that helps.

Canon A540

The date will only show up on the picture under a limited set of circumstances on the Canon PowerShot digital cameras, of which the A540 is one. You've probably found the Date function in the menu, but discovered that it was off, grayed out, and skipped over whenever you tried to reset it.

Date stamp will only work in "Postcard" mode. Press the Function button (labeled "FUNC SET"), then press the down button until you reach the Recording Pixels selection (usually labeled "L", but not always). It's probably the bottom onscreen selection. Use the right or left buttons to select Postcard, then press the Function button again.

Press the Menu button and scroll down to Date Stamp. Now you should be able to select "Date" or "Date & Time" with the right or left button. Press Menu again and take your pictures.

Connecting the Canon Powershot A540 to a computer

First you should have a program installed in your computer to transfer your pictures, best is canon's.
Once the USB cable is connected you should turn your camera on, automatictly the program detects your camera and asks you to press the transfering button. Good Luck.
