Never store your tapes or camcorder near anything magnetic. Sounds like it could be a dirty tape head (the one that reads the tape) or a loose connection with the wires. Try a different cable first if you can, then go on to cleaning the tape head with a Q-tip and 99% alcohol. The tape head is located on the shiny round metal thing that the tape runs on. Questions? Don't hesitate to ask. Your tape should be fine as long as it wasn't near a magnet.

never clean the drum with a q-tip theres a tiny sensor on the drum that can fall of or break if messed with use a soft head cleaning tape for 20 secs never use a hard head cleaning tape they are to rough on the drum i work for canon and actually just repaired this model today.
