I have a 2005 Suzuki vinson 500. When I hook up the battery it will start if the key is turned off it will attempt to start. What could be the problem?

This is the drive system for your quad... it take all the engine power and transfers it to the rear wheels,, its going to get hot,, If it starts smoking real bad... and smells worse.. drop by your local Suzuki dealer and talk to the service manager,, get his opinion.
Although the symptoms you have described are those of a low battery, there are a few other things it could be.
First, have the battery tested to see if that is the problem.
Then, take apart and check the starter solenoid to see if the copper disc is burned and needs to be cleaned and lubricated.
Also, then take apart and check the starter motor, to see if it needs to be cleaned and refurbished.

could be a bad ground or a bad connection on the positive wire to starter. try turning the ignition on and jumping from battery to postive on starter. good luck!
one of your repaired wires is not getting power or ground.. Recheck your wires,.
And most likely look farther up the wire loom for burned threw wires..
