Red light goes on when reveresed

Sounds like the motor cables are in reverse at the controller. Check that the red is in the positive and the black wire is in the negative on the controller.

I have a 1998 and I just confronted the same problem. It seems to take like 1 gear in reserve and like 2 gear in 1 gear. Any thoughts? I don't really it should be the transmission since it still works going forward in 2 different gears. Thanks.

I would normally expect this to be a wsitch with three terminals on the back. Power goes into the center. Forward goes to one outside terminal and reverse goes to the other outside terminal

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem. Make sure neither light on the sensors is flickering ever so slightly. Sometimes hard to see. If the main light doesn't flash 10 times then it is probably the RPM sensor board. This is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor. It's job is to reverse the door when it runs into something on the way down but it will give this problem when it goes bad.

MAKE SURE THAT FORWARD AND REVERSE ARE FULLY ENGAGEING AND DISENGAGING

yur transmission just went

Try pouring some shredder oil into the throat where you normally insert the paper and run the machine in reverse.Put machine back into ready condition.
Put a piece of paper in the throat just enough so the machine should run but not all the way in so that the cutting mechanism catches the paper...all you want to do is make the machine run forwards but not actually be feeding in any paper.

most likely if reverse is perfect but forward is dead,, your control board has blown mosfets , power drivers for forward operation
