Re: dell 17" flat screen monitor

This is the way how to examine where the problem is. You have to check that you can see the image on screen by shining a flashlight into the screen, not directly but find the best angle to the screen and take a look very closely. If you can see the icons (Power on both cpu and monitor), there will be a minor problem. Like me, I can see window image using flashlight and check lamps inside. Some of them were broken. It can be easily replaced. If you cannot see any icon on the screen. I would say that there are some problems with inverter board. If you have soldering tool and want to fix it by yourself, check the caps first. It may cause this problem. Some caps might show leaking or dark spot on the board because of too high temp. If you don't have soldering tool, you better go get a technician to do so.

You can verify that it is the inverter going out by turning the monitor on in a dark room and shining a light directly into the screen. If you cannot see anything, then something has happened to the power circuit. Perhaps the solder on the power port has gone bad, and needs to be redone, or part of the circuit board fried. The only way to figure this out is to open it up and take a look-see. If you don't wish to try this, you can always take it to a shop and have them look at it. Be careful opening it, the inverter is high voltage. Don't have any power going to the monitor if you do this.

hi, extremely common problem for dell 17 in monitors. the capacitors and transistors on the power board internally have gone bad. to get repaired, it may cost 40-50 at a shop. i have repaired these in the past and they always come out well for at least 3 more years. may want to find another monitor though. if you would like steps on how to repair, let me know and i will find my old repair threads to give to you.

Describe your Dell E173FP 17" LCD Monitor Problem The monitor seems to be turning itself repeatedly on and off. No picture is ever seen, the screen stays black with a slight flicker.

Sounds like the monitor is cycling power.
Try plugging the monitor into a different power socket. Try not to use the same power bar as your computer

Flickering switch light, blank screen

Hi, First of all it is not advisable to open up monitors without proper tools as they contain hazardous elements. Dell monitors however do have a 3 year SEPARATE warranty. Check on the back of the monitor and look for the monitor serial number. is should start with CN-xxxxx-,, or JP-XXXXX-. give that to a dell tech and they should be able to replace that.
