- I tried another hard drive which is just like mine and it worked, so I don't think that's the problem.

First thing is to check what format the HDD is using - if it's been formatted on a Windows box, it's likely to be NTFS - and a lot of consumer electronics devices can't read NTFS, just FAT or FAT32.
