This malfunction of the Maytag H2O (ice flap door and blinking control lights) is an engineering design error. Two of the capacitors on the HV (high Voltage) board go bad.....usually after 1 year. There are thousands of identical complaints on message boards on the Internet with different results from Maytag. I had the local Maytag service come and replace the board ($300), and finally got through to Maytag where I was first told that there was nothing they could do as it was out of warranty. Then I told her that I had to have it fixed already. Then her tune changed...that they may have been able to do something before it was fixed, and now they definitely could not. >>> so be persistent when you call 1-800-688-9900 !

We have the same problem, but now our compressor is not working either. Help! It's Thanksgiving weekend.

  • Anonymous Jan 02, 2008

Had the same problem and called maytage with a list off the internet with 35 people having the same problem. Maytag agreed to pay the price to fix it which would have been 400 dollars!!! Now our icemake has stopped working-anyone else with that problem. We have had the regfrig for only 15 months and 2 major problems, ugh.

  • Navycpowif Jan 05, 2008

Ours started the same thing on Friday! lights flashing dispenser flapping- scared my daughter to death- ours is about the same age 17 months old now I guess. Thanks for the info- we will call Maytag first thing and make sure I let them know I am aware more then 35 people have the same issues. and hey have offered to fix. Thanks again. I can't believe they want that much to fix the problem concidering howmuch we paid for these Refridgerators.

  • Anonymous Jan 09, 2008

Replaced Control Panel but still blinking and ice maker flap continually opens and shuts. Still makes ice.

  • Pablojxn Jan 21, 2008

Ours started the flapping and ice/water did not work. Gonna have to call the Maytag people tomorrow. They definitely have a design error.

  • Anonymous Jan 25, 2008

Same problem lights flashing and the flap continues to open and close. no way to fix this on your own huh!! We also shut off the power as well.

  • tachow Feb 12, 2008

Same problem with my ICE2O. Flashing lights and flap opening and closing constently. Quite annoying. I will call Maytag tomorrow.

  • AIRCRU Feb 12, 2008

same issue of not cooling in the freezer or refrigerator, lights on control panel flashing on and off, and ice maker door constantly opening and closing. Unit is almost 2 years old. Called Maytag and they said it wouldn't be a problem to fix, sent a service tech out 3 days later and it was fixed at no charge. I think because of sites like this, I received trouble free service from them.

maytag french-door bottom freeze/ lights flashing on panel and flapper door driving me nuts on ice maker . i took the two screws out of the front and removed the face plate bye lifting up slightly , there are a couple of plugs inside and you can at least stop the flapper still waiting to see if it is staying cold or not, sears said it would be five or six days before repair

  • duane7 Mar 08, 2008

    same as above
    power off worked once

  • Git-R-Done Mar 21, 2008

My wife and I were awoken at 2:30 a.m. last sunday to the same problem, I Ordered and replaced the front controller board, that was not the problem.

I am glad I found this site now I will push maytag to get it fixed with no further expense to us.

I will keep you all posted as to what happens.

  • MMDoc27 Mar 21, 2008

Same issue.  Flashing & Blinking lights.  Called Maytag direct and scheduled part deliver and service call. Told all would be covered as a "courtesy." Just have to wait A WEEK.  Found a tip about disconnecting the power to the dispenser to stop the sound & light show.  Just don't know about cooling yet.

  • Remit Apr 02, 2008

Thank goodness I found this web board. Last week same problem after 1 year of ownership, but I want to personally thank the guy who informed us that Maytag will come out and fix this problem for free if you are persistent, which they did this morning. I placed the call to Maytag 1- 800-688-9900 and stated my circuit board went crazy, no ice or water, and the ice flap had a mind of it's own, they quickly scheduled me for a repair. At first they told me I had to pay for the visit and diagnosis with Labor and Part for free, but after thinking about it I called again and another customer service rep made the correction to a totally free maintenance call. So be careful when you call, this service call and repair should be totally free.

The repairman explained to me that all the original boards were short circuiting but Maytag has made the corrections and developed an improved circuit board. There will be no recall, so you have to call Maytag direct. Also be careful not to call the store where it was purchased, they will not tell you about this, but charge you 125.00 for their visit plus labor and parts........and I heard this part cost about $300. - $400. dollars.

  • Anonymous Apr 15, 2008

I too was really happy to see the number to call this morning. The crazy fridge flap woke me up three times last night.

The good news is that I called Maytag (now Whirlpool) and they were very nice, scheduled the fix for tomorrow! I am impressed. Hopefully this takes care of the problem and it does not reoccur!

  • lmcroos Apr 23, 2008

Just one more ICE2O owner suffering from the flapping ice door virus that almost all of these units gets. There is an inexpensive fix for this if you search the forums that I tried this week, and viola ! No more flapping flashing and ice/water is working again.

This involves a little technical fiddling but if you have better skills with a soldering iron than dealing with cusomer service then this might be for you.

Maytag should be ashamed of the way they are dealing with people on this.

  • Anonymous Jun 16, 2008

We have the same problem lights blinking and flapping flapper. What a pain for a new applicance. I called Maytag states there is a recall. At this point we are waiting for the repair service to get back to us. They did come and disconnected the computer to the flashing lights and flapping. Thank god the cold still works. They just don't make things like the use too. Gee I miss the light show!!!

  • jessiegrlq Jun 23, 2008

I purchased my refrigerator (french door style) 2 years ago in 2006 and I am not sure if it is under warranty or not. My fridge is doing the exact same thing as I type this...lights flashing, door flapping. I just got off the phone with Maytag/Whirlpool and they didn't even ask about a warranty or not. They said they are going to FedEx the part overnight and scheduled a service call for the following morning. Free of charge.

  • Anonymous Jun 23, 2008

If your lights are flashing on the door and the door for the ice is flapping open and closed then here is the problem. The high voltage board that is located on the back of the refrigerator needs to be replaced. Maytag will cover the cost regardless of when you purchased the fridge. One other note is you can take the cover off of the top hinge on the ice and water door and disconnect the wire that goes to the ice door and flashing lights. The reason you might want to do this is to stop listening to the ice door flapping open and closed all night long until you get a repair guy over. - Good luck

  • SFitz Jul 14, 2008

When I called Maytag, I was informed that the refrigerator will
eventually stop cooling. Let's hope the part arrives and repair is
    done before that happens!

If we had not seen the tip on how to disable the panel by disconnecting
the plug that is under the top left door hinge, we would have suffered
through listening to the ice door flapping all weekend.

It's a "known" issue but not a recall. So the parts and labor are free
but you aren't warned in advance of the problem and can't find
information about it on the Maytag site. It should be a recall.

Tip: Don't call Maytag unless you have the model number AND serial
number. Don't use the "schedule a service call" option. I think it
was option # 4 to discuss the problem with a representative who will
    schedule the appointment for you.

  • Anonymous Aug 04, 2008

To describe what's wrong with my Maytag Refrigerator would be redundant in light of all the other postings.

What's been done to get Maytag to recall this refrigerator/ Has anyone gotten service that totally fixed this issue?

  • Anonymous Sep 01, 2008

My Maytag Refrigerator is only two years old and has been fixed 5 times in last 7 months. Started with ice maker not working and door flapping with blinking light. Beware it just gets worse, now my frig won't cool. Every other month we have to call a repair man and they keep replacing everything. Ice maker twice, mother board twice, fan, frig motor. When our extended warranty runs out we'll have to buy a new one.

I contacted Sears they said call Maytag, I contacted General Manager at Maytag at Corporate Office, his remark was "you signed the paperwork when you bought it, so it's yours". Maytag offered a 10 or 15% discount on a new Maytag Refrigerator, why buy a new one, mine is new and it doesn't work. I will never buy another Maytag Product.

  • vtabats Sep 01, 2008

Our refrigerator is barely two years old. The first problem was the same, ice maker stopped working, lights flashed, door opened and closed. We had it fixed free by Maytag, but beware it only gets worse. In the last 7 months we have had our rerigerator fixed 5 times. The icemaker stops working and the refrigerator stops cooling, today it's broken again. We have had the icemaker replaced twice, motherboard replaced twice, fan, motor......need I say more. I've contacted Sears, they say call Maytag. I called the general manager at Maytag Corporate Office and he said, "you signed the paperwork when you bought it, it's yours". We were lucky we took out the extended warranty, so we aren't paying for the repairs, but we keep a block of ice in the fridge, because it breaks so frequently. When the extended warranty has expired we'll but a new one. BUT NOT A MAYTAG EVER AGAIN.

  • haynesjr Sep 01, 2008

In the middle of the night, the refrigerator went crazy. Lights flashing, flap making a racket. Glad I found this sight and 24 others with a similar issue. Of course, it is a holiday and I will have to wait until tomorrow to reach anyone. The tip to disconnect the wire under the door hinge works temporarily.

  • keeferjw Sep 21, 2008

    lights flashing

    ice maker flap open/closes continually

    buttons going crazy

nothing working on door panel pad

  • haynesjr Sep 30, 2008

Had the same problem. I called the Maytag 800 number and explained the issue. I also stated that I understand this is a "known" problem and Maytag was making the repair at no cost. The representative agreed, mailed the part and sent the repair folks. All is better now.

  • moffie911 Jan 16, 2009

I have a similar problem with the dispenser lights flashing and a clicking sound. I live in Australia and Maytag is considered an exotic up market product and charged for accordingly. built a new house and designed the fidge enclosure around a new Armana 2 door fridge freezer we bought. Bloody fridge was a nightmaare everything went wrong within 1 year. In the end the motherboard failed and I was informed it would take 2 months for a new one to arrive!!!!!! I told supplier to remove fridge and give me my money back. they did! then I found a Maytag fridge of same dimensions to fit the enclosure, well little did I know that Armana and Maytag same product by different names. The trouble continued. several failures fixed under 2 year warranty. Now just out of warranty and the dispenser has gone crazy. I called Maytag's Australian office and they simply want to send a local contractor to fix and charge for the repair. thank goodness I found this website and I will now go into bat hard, as Aussies are renowned for, wish me luck or kiss goodbye to foreigners buying USA products! only joking but do wish me luck, please!

  • KingJaga May 15, 2013

Call -1-800-253-1301, Still works as of May 2013, tell them its a known issue and they will schedule repair at no charge.

  • feething Jul 08, 2013

I have tried calling Customer Service and all I get is an option for New Products or Customer Service, it's driving me mad!

  • feething Jul 13, 2013

I had no joy at all with Maytag and so have had to resort to buying an HV board myself and hoping I can fix it. Given I\'m insulin dependent and can\'t even keep insulin in there, I\'m really ticked off with them. Now, even though nothing rotten in fridge and freezer empty, there is an odor emanating from bottom of it. A friend checked a rodent (accccckkkkk) had not gotten into fan and died etc, so just one more problem to deal with regarding this

  • Anonymous Mar 17, 2014

Does the water line need to be hooked up for the control panel to work and the unit to cool?

  • Anonymous Mar 22, 2014

seems like a short.lights flashing, no water or ice also

As I mentioned before my Maytag was doing the same thing, I called Maytag expecting a big fight but they were really nice about it.
This is a recall problem and even if your warrenty is up Maytag will repair it at NO COST to you.
They shiped me the HV board and sent a repairman who had it fixed in about 10 minutes with a newley designed HV board.

    call 1-800-688-9900

This problem is not just the Maytag brand fridge but also a problem with other fridges made for other companies like Sears by Maytag. pretty much the same Model just made by Maytag with the sears or other brand on it.

Dear Gorden Jump, If you were still alive you would no longer be the lonley Maytag repairman.

There is more work than you can imagine, I hope the lonliness didn't kill you.

  • summerisebro Aug 24, 2010

THANKS for the post! The details you provided are still good, as of August 2010. It took me a few calls, but calling the number you listed here provided me with the results to have this issue addressed. With no challenges from Maytag, but a solid solution to this issue.

Just had this happen this morning at 2am....My Maytag French Door with drawer's ice maker blinking like I hit a jackpot and the ice cube door flapping. Using the info in this forum, I called the 1-800-253-1301 service number. I spent maybe 10 minutes explaining the issue and letting the CSR know that it seems to be a common issue per internet forum traffic. He looked it up and scheduled the main board (in back of fridge) to be replaced at no charge. Posting this info to let others know the info still works as of Jan 2013. Thanks!

I am having this same issue now, but Maytag told me they cannot do anything because there is not a recall on it. How old is your fridge? Mine is 6 years , I know it's long out of warranty, but feel like they should take care of it since they have for so more other people. Do you know who you spoke with? I can't afford the $400 to repair it and don't have the skills for the DIY repair. Thanks!

  • KingJaga May 15, 2013

Called this morning and told them what was wrong. I also said," This seems to be a known issue and based on internet forum traffic you have fixed this at no charge in the past." They scheduled a day for the repair 5 days from when I called. So make sure you unplug the connector under the top left door hinge. Use a philips screwdriver to remove the cover and then disconnect. Stops the rythmic cycling and allows the compressor to run and keep your fridge cool. Thanks for the help!!! I called 1-800-253-1301, wasn't even on the phone 5 minutes.

Yep I just had the same problem. May tag is a piece of JUNK!!! They won't bother to address this problem that I had with the fridge and kept saying "It's out of a 1 year warranty" F-U Maytag. Please everyone. Do not buy this fridge. I expected more from the customer service.

Yep just got off with LIVE CHAT with MAYTAG ...... according to them this is not a recall issue. I must pay $$$..... here is out chat

Marcos O.: Thank you for contacting Maytag! My name is Marcos O. I will be with you momentarily.

    Paul Wilson: ok

Marcos O.: Thank you for contacting Maytag! One moment while i review your question.

Marcos O.: I'm sorry to hear of the issue you are having with your refrigerator.

Marcos O.: We would recommend having a local certified technician in your area properly diagnose the issue you are experiencing.

Marcos O.: I do not see any recalls or known issues for your appliance.

Marcos O.: You may go to or call (800)344-1274 Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM EST to schedule a service appointment with a local certified technician.

Paul Wilson: Marcos O I have found a number of post from people with this same problem. They advised MAYTAG mailed them a new "Main Board" and sent out a repair person to replace at no charge. All of their post have been positive with dealing with this problem

Marcos O.: Nothing pulls up for your model number. Other than scheduling a repair service for your appliance there is nothing else Maytag can assist you with for your repair.

They were so rude to me. They say there is no recall and they lie and said the product is 11 years old, but I purchased it 9 years ago. They say the only thing they could. Do is get me over to the parts debtor they can schedule me with an authorized certified technician for$88 to diagnose the problem andwill alsobe liable for parts an addition labor. Michael is the customer relations manager in Michigan. I'm done with this irresponsible company!

This is NavyCPOwif- As you read above I have a crazy Maytag H20 as well!

I am a research person so looked around a little last night and found a site. for DIY folks. Every one is halving the same problem. I suggest a civil action suit !!! But in the mean time I am going to have my Navy Avionics Technition husband tackle it rather then deal with Maytag right now. " cost almost as much as a military fighter jet, so he should be able to do it!" BUt I wanted to pass this information along to other DIY folks out there. We have not done it yet since ours just went crazy Friday night. So we disconected the door /water connection. But everything else seems to be working fine at this point. Serious about the class action suite!!! these should be recalled we bought ours in GA June 2006 so it seems that the ones made in the 2006 time frame are the ones with the issues- I assuem that the folks that are having problems with in the 7 8 month time frame have the same lot due to ours is 18 months old but we paid $2600 were some have paid $1500.00. So not sure but something needs to be done becouse the list of other issues with this fridge seems pretty long and very expensive.... Good luck!

Site to fix panel issue: for $3 to $20- DIY:
I have just fix my maytag M#MFI2568AEB at a cost of $3.00 Believe or not. You need to go to website hhttp:// Everything you need is on the site. (yes gets Maytag off the hook, but gets your fridge going quicker)

The REAL cause of all of this is a wet microswitch behind the rubber boot that you press the glass against. The rubber seal leaks and water gets behind here and into the switch, shorting it out. If it stays shorted long enough, then it will most likely blow the lead-in diode from the switch to the control board and also the 2 electrolytic capacitors. - CharlyV

The phone number worked for me, but mine must be a different model than yours. Model afi2538aeq. They say they've had no problems and the board would cost $314.39 with $60 core charge. Service should be approximately $89.00. Main control board # 12920710.

Folks I had the same problem called Maytag they wouldn't honor any support, ran across this link which with a little soldering experience I was able to repair my Fridg. for less than $10US. in 15 mins. Beats $375.00 for a new High Voltage board.

The instructions are simple:

one note: the Radio Shack part number listed in the instructions for the 480Micro Farad capacitor is not correct (P/N 272-1030) should be P/N 272 - 1050)
Good luck,

Our fridge MFI2568AES is/has been doing the exact same thing for about a year off and on now. Yesterday Fridgezilla was flapping for the entire day. As I noticed the temperature was dropping, I decided to reconnect the cable above the door hinge (was unplugged for about 30 minutes of a 9 hour flapping session) and eventually the unit came back to life. I called the Maytag number provided above 1-800-253-1301 and explained the situation and indicated that there were hundreds of others with the same problem and asked if it would be replaced at no charge as it seems some others have had. I was told there were no complaints or recalls on this fridge. I asked if she meant this week or for how long. The response I got from 2 CSRs was that there are no complaints or issues filed since the unit was produced. They will send a service technician to inspect my currently proper working refrigerator at my cost however. It appears that 1 of 2 things will then happen: the tech will either say your fridge seems to be working just fine OR yes Frankenfridge needs to have the board replaced and they will charge me. Maytag said they have teams of people who are scouring the internet looking for issues and negative feedback. I am wondering how this site popped up so quickly on a simple google search for me but they can't find it. I'm never buying another product of theirs and will be making as much noise as possible if I have to spend a dime on this piece of crap. Frustrated in Calgary.

Just called Maytag, mentioned the number of posts I had read addressing the same issue and they immediately offered no charge parts and labor even though I'm out of warranty. Part express shipped to the house and service within 3 days. Asked if the part was a new design that would correct the problem and was told that it was.

The web site provided by previouspost doesn'y seem to be working now?

  • padaniel Jan 24, 2008

Where can I get direction on how to replace the control panel?

We went out Friday night and came home to the same thing. The lights were all blinking erratically, and the ice door flap was opening and closing. I am shocked to see that this is a continuous problem with this unit, and they haven't recalled it or done anything about it. Of course, customer service is closed until Monday morning. We had to disconnect the wires in order to get it to stop. I will be calling Maytag/Whirlpool first thing Monday morning. It seems to be cooling ok at this point, but concerened. How is your experience with the fridge working with the front unit out?

Ice flap continues to open and shut, then it sits for a while crazy blinking touch pad.

I would be looking at a new control board. Sometimes you don't know whaTthere going to do and when there going to do it when they are on there way out. The board will tell the unit the temp inside and tell the compresser to turn on or off and to make ice or not. It is the heart and if it is faulty then nothing works properley

Kennmore refrigerator is not making ice,but water

The control light flashes to indicate the infrared beam is being blocked. The flap on the opposite side blocks the beam when the door is open to prevent ice from being dropped on the floor rather than in the ice bin. If you pushe the flap in so it's flush with the liner (use care not to block the hole) the light should go from flashing to on in a steady state. If not, your electronics are bad and would need to be replaced. If the light does glow steady, then the problem is with your ice maker, water valve or ice maker fill tube.

Kenmore bottom freezer refrigerator

This sounds like the Maytag bottom mount that has a High Voltage Control Board problem. Does this have the freezer/fridge temp. display/controls on the left hand fridge door? Whats the model number and on the manufacture tag does it something on it like Code:0304 maybe? Let me know I may have an answer I do work on these for a living.
