Question about Philips DVP642 DVD Player
I've seen two postings of people with this same problem. I've had the DVD player for a little less that two years and all the sudden it reads "NO DISK" to any DVD or CD that I play. Cleaning the lens didn't help. Once in a while it will play a disk, but it will soon freeze, then go and repeat til it finally stops. How can this be fixed? I really don't want to have to send it in somewhere. HELP!
Usually if there is a NO DISC error, and the lens is verified clean, there is either dust in the laser assembly (use a can of compressed air to clean it out) or a loose laser assembly cable. Also check to make sure the lens can bob (wiggle around), and that it can slide back and forth.
The emergency eject is underneath, its a small slot. Insert a toothpick at one end and slide to the other end to open the tray.

I've have the same problem. I took the cover off clean the lens and thought that fixed it, but it happened again a week later. This time I slowly slid the laser toward the rear of the case, then tried putting the disc in again. The laser moves across the disk and it starts spinning (I noticed before that the disk never spins and displays no disk). So cleaning the lens only helped because I moved the laser in the process causing it to start moving. I cleaned the bar and the rail that the laser slides on with WD40 (because that's all I had handy). We'll see if that does the trick, if not I'll Velcro the cover on for easy access until I can afford a 1080 up-convert player (in this economy I'm not spending unnecessary money).
