Question about Kenmore Freezer 20.3 cu. ft. Frost Free Upright Freezer

1 Answer

Kenmore Upright Freezer 253.21741104 Loss of Power

Over the past 4 years or so, my Kenmore freezer has lost power about 4 times, losing all the food being stored.  All I have to do to "reset" the freezer is to unplug it, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in.  The freezer runs for about 6-9 months reliably, then unpredicably, it will againt shut itself down for some unknown reason and stay off until I discover the situation.

Could this be a bad circuit board?  Does this freezer have a circuit board?  Anyone seen this problem and if so, how did you solve it?

Thanks for the speedy reply (less than 24 hours, just awesome). Looking forward to your update!

Any tips with replacing the board will be most appreciated.  I take it the new boards are troublefree?

I checked the serial number of the unit and it starts with "WB229" so based on your information its a bad circuit board.  I just looked from the Front of the unit and what looks to be the board is high up near the right side of the compressor (looking from the front).  The board  looks like a small relay about 2" X 3".

I'm going to call Sears and see if they will fix it. Worst case I can replace it myself. I assume this will fix the problem.  Thanks for your help, especially with the recall info.

This is my first time using FixYa and it will save me 300-400 bucks assuming this solves the problem.  Nice service.

Yes, it does have a control board. It is located under the rear of the freezer near the compressor. There was a service bulletin out a few years ago about the exact problem you are having. I will not be able to find out if your freezer falls under this design change until tomorrow when I get on my computer at the shop.
What is happening is the board has a fault in it that won't allow it to come back on sometimes if the power blinks off and back on. I am not sure if the repair credit is still active but we have changed the control boards on many of these units free of charge as recently as a year ago.
I will reply back when I find out for sure.

I found the service bulletin today. The recall is SF46-479.

I covers the serial number range WB215 - WB234. If the first three numbers of your serial number fall anywhere between 215 and 234 you are part of the recall. I found no letter stating they have ended the recall so it should be repaired at no charge to you. You can make sure the new kit has not been installed by moving the freezer out and looking at the control board mounted to the bottom of the freezer just above and to the left of the compressor. If it has a green circular sticker on it, it has been replaced. If not it needs to be if your serial number matches what I gave you.

Check this out and let me know what you find. The new boards have not given this problem that I am aware of so you should be in good shape.

If you do fall under the recall, call sears and sears and give them the information I gave you and get a call set up.

    Thanks for the reply

I don't think you will have any problem. There were letters sent out when the recall was first announced with a special phone number to call but some people were missed as you can expect with several thousand machines nation wide.

    Good luck.

Whirlpool Gold Resource Saver GI6FDRXX- do you really have to manually reset if you lose power?

L oIf you are out of town, the freezer will keep contents cold for 24-48 hours. You can have a neighbor check on it while you are out of town, or you can take the food to a neighbors house, or you don't go at all. Think about this, you can't stop enjoying time away because the freezer may go out. What would you do if the water line broke in the house. The likelihood of that happening is greater than the freezer going out . Go and enjoy yourself. It likely won't happen again.

Freezer not freezing

If you can hear the motor running it could be the thermostat that has gone or if there is no noise at all it could be the motor that has died, a good easy fix ( sometimes works ) is to turn the freezer off leave it for 24 hours with no power then try turning it on again.

If the freezer was stored and not running for 7 years it may have lost coolant.  Since the compressor is running recharging the coolant may fix the problem.  Hot compressor might indicate low coolant since its motor is immersed in it.

Kenmore Chest Freezer C675-18012-1G purchased april 2000

Average freezers last for several years, usually 10 or more. The compressor should not run all of the time, maybe less than 10 to 20 percent of the time if it is working properly. Not sure what you mean by the bipass, some freezer have a manual defrost, and in this mode it will not cool. Insure the location where you have the freezer allows for ample air circulation, sometimes folks put them in little spaces that prevent air circulation to the condensing/compressor unit and they overheat and do not work well and fail very quickly.
