Question about Canon PowerShot A85 Digital Camera

1 Answer

My camera will only take pictures of a purple screen

My camera worked perfectly up until recently. Last time i turned it on the display screen is purple with black and white lines al over it, when ever i take a picture or try to make a film it only saves an image of the purple with white and black lines. This doesnt appear to be a display problem as these are the images that come up when i load the card into my computer.

I have reformatted the memory card and changed the batteries and am now at a loss.

Any ideas?

The camera took great pictures then all of a sudden the screen appears as a purple haze -- and the pictures come out as just a purple blurry haze. Adjusting brightness doesn't work. Yet, the shutt

If the LCD displays correctly on previous photos then the problem is more than likely a CCD or associated ribbon connector failure due to moisture/condensation or age/misuse. Good luck with finding a replacement part!

I have a Samsung SL620 which has worked perfectly for several years. Now when it's turned on, all you see on the screen and on the last picture taken are distorted red/purple/black vertical lines.

All things break down and if you have had the camera for several years then maybe its time to invest in a new one. It sounds like it doesnt owe you anything. You can buy the same camera if you really like it only it will be a more modern version

Purple Screen

If it is only 2 months old, then you still have warranty.
A purple lcd, viewfinder and photo is a 100% CCD failure.
If out of warranty, not worth the repair.

I bought mine 2 1/2 yrs ago too. Found this solution on this site and tried it. It worked perfectly.
Turn to TV mode, set the exposure to 15 seconds by pushing the little "arrow dial" until you have 15"
Push the button to take the picture.
Wait 7 seconds from when you push the button, then turn over and open the battery door while it is "taking the picture."
Close the battery door and turn back on.
I did this three times and the last time, it worked and the iris became unstuck.
Then I took a million pictures to get the iris moving.
Good luck!

Turn the power off and on again displayed

Well, I can not really believe it, but I had the exact same problem as you and that idea ACTUALLY worked. Smacking the sides against the palm of your hand does seem to work quite well. Thanks!

Display turns purple?

Sorry to say that this sounds like failure of the camera's CCD imager. This is not something that you can repair yourself. If still under warranty, Canon will repair this for you free of charge. Even if no longer under warranty, still recommend contacting Canon, as this should not happen in a newer model camera (be nice, and maybe they'll be nice about it too :-).

If in US or Canada, Call 1-800-OK-CANON. Anywhere else, contact Canon support through

Purple lcd display

Hello tonyj111, If your old pictures look fine on the display, then the problem is related to the ccd sensor itself. The purple color is displayed because of a problem in the signal transmision from the ccd sensor to the camera's main processor. This is done using 3 channels one for each primary color (RGB red green blue). If the connector to the sensor is broken, or got out of place (loose) because some mechanic shock or symilar, the data processing woun't come out right. It is purple because your camera's processor mess up blue and red signals therefore resulting same purple instead of blue or red colours. In order to fix this you will need to either send the camera to a service center to have those connections checked (if your camera is still in warranty you will want to do this) or ask me for further instructions if you wish to try to dissasemble the camera yourself. In either way the problem is fixable and in most probabilities a cheap fix will work. Good luck

Purple Pictures

This is a CCD sensor problem and should be replaced. Try to have it done free of charge by Sony even though your camera is an old model because CCD sensor should last 10 years +.
