Question about Hitachi 65S500 65" HDTV-Ready Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

My Hitachi 65SWX20B Model, made in 02, just developed Picture disturbance

Specifically, it is a thin blue line that goes across the length of the screen just above the half-way point of the screen. There is another blue line that is a perfect arc above this straight line(about 14 inches above the central blue line at the far left, 10 inches above straight blue line in the middle and another 14 " above the straight blue line on the right.) This forms a faded blue color distortion between these two lines. It's almost like an overlay of blue on top of the picture. The tv picture is not affected with any other visible distortion. I tried the magic system fix, but had no effect. The tv wasn't bumped into or disturbed in any way. Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!

For some reason, it will not allow the pic to be downloaded. It is a .jpg format and not above the 1.5 mb requirement. But, let's say it is a convergence issue. How do I fix it is it is the blue that is out(sincethis isthe color on the screen)?

Thank you. I'll check out the website and see if I can get those ICs chips. Is there a referral network for the Raleigh, NC area in case the replacement issue is over my head so I can find a trustworthy company to do the work?

Can you post a picture of the set. This might be a convergence problem. seeing the set will confirm this.

Thank you,

If it is a convergence problem you will have to remove and replace the two convergence ICs chips. This is a link showing how to remove and replace the ICs:

    This should help.

You should also replace the bias resistors which are sometimes damaged by the in-rush current flow.

    Thank you,

So the lines goes up and down or is it across from side to side, if it's side to side then it's your terminal power board.

Hitachi 65SWX20B 65 in. Rear... Problem

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Blue tint and lines on screen.

Those lines sound like "retrace lines" and several things can cause them. The most common are shorts inside the picture tube and shorted semiconductors in the video driver circuits. They can also be seen if the blue screen voltage is too high or if someone has tampered with the screen voltage control.

Vertical, pencil-thin blue line appears after 10 minutes of viewing (any source)

I would suspect a connection breaking down as the set heats up. A shop will probably have to put the set in a stand to hold it while they check for loose connections or defective components inside. Not a DIY job by any means. If this line went completely through the picture either vertically or horizontally and stayed there then this would have indicated a failure in the Panel itself. A thin Line any where on the screen consisting of one pixel in width is a Panel Failure according to Hitachi.
