My monitor went blank on my HP Pavilion zv5000...I

My monitor went blank on my HP Pavilion zv5000...I first ran into power supply problems and after replacing it twice, I hard-wired directly to the board. After putting the laptop back together, my monitor wont work...checked wiring twice, seems ok. If I can't figure out the monitor problem, is there a way to remove the hard drive and connect it to one of my tower pcs to recovery my data? All I really care about is the data on drive...I can always pick up another laptop down the road.
