To determine if the video card or the LCD screen is faulty, connect an external monitor to the video port on the laptop. Power up the monitor first and the boot up the laptop, the video data will automatically divert to the external monitor. If you get a normal image on the monitor then the video card is OK and the fault is LCD screen or the video cable. If you don't get an image on the monitor then it is a video card problem, and it is a motherboard problem.

i. lcd cables gone bad.
ii. the logic board fried.

neither, you should replace the whole lcd.

Have you ever had the inside of the laptop cleaned out?

If not this needs to be done. If it has been a longtime, this needs to be done also.

What is the model number of the Sony VAIO?
Bottom of laptop.

PERHAPS I can find a Service Manual, and/or pictorial disassembly information. Then we will see if you wish to perform this procedure.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist. (Sorry Gort!)

I have a sony vaio laptop and I can't hear any sound, but if I conect hearphones then I hear sound.

I have the same laptop as you, mine is also a Sony Vaio but mine is fine. Did you check the task bar? Along the bottom of the screen on the right, there is a small arrow head, click and select the speaker icon then set up your volume from there. Failing that Pc World should be able to solve it within minuets for a small charge or any local pc/laptop dealer

I have a sony vaio mini laptop, after windows update it wouldn't boot up screen went black with flashing curser at left hand corner, but cannot type anything. tried restarting and even taking out...

you will need the restore cdrom's to fix this issue. sounds like you the wrong upates! you should only updates that come from the sony web site for your particular sony item.
refer to sony tech support.

I cant hear anything,in my PCG 6Q1L sony vaio Laptop the buttons are ok, the icon indicates mute and on, but in on I can´t hear in control panel sound seems to be activated

Check the conditions of your sound cards including all,i.e. i/o sound cards and also the motherboard inbuilt sound cards.
Also scan your computer for virus , due to virus infection, the registery values might have gone changed.
After scanning, try ,it should work , IF it don't,check registery values settings and try with another values.

Have you installed the drivers properly? if yes see if you have checked the mute button in speaker volume. you can also have a check with the sound volume with the laptop buttons.

Try rebooting and hitting the F8 repeatedly as soon as the boot sequence starts. When it comes up to an options screen select repair. From there you can let windows try to repair or select to install to the factory settings.
