Installed and uploaded photos just fine of the first try. month or so later I hooked it up to the computer again via USB port and nothing. Have tried different ports, have tried doing it with the camera on/off. tried un-installing and re-installing the program. tech support e-mailed me an updated program. un-installed the other and installed the new. nothing. Nikon has been 'expediting' this for a week and a half now. please, someone help!!!
If windows does not recognise the camera you must suspect the driver. I'm more a camera man, ten a Windows man, because with me everything works (I do have Win7 and Mac OSX 10.9.1)
Did you try to install Adobe Photoshop Elements, or something like Gimp? With these software you should be able to transfer pictures too. If these programs also don't work, it must be the driver.

What is the Pc doing that shows you it is not recognizing the camera?
Have you looked in My computer at your drives to see if it is showing there? For some reason mine sometimes shows up my F drive instead of my camera drive. Then you can just click on the drive and open the folder for the photos.

What operating system are you using?
If you have xp or vista, you can uninstall the software and transfer the pictures since these operating system has built in drivers.

Vista is your problem. Solution...buy an inexpensive card reader to download your pics to a folder you create on your desktop. From there, you can send the pics to your photo editing software.

Greetings,
I would take out the SD memory card and use it with a
card reader like this one: http://bit.ly/5fruhB . You simply take out
the SD memory card and put it in the card reader. Then put the usb end
of the card reader into your computer and download the pictures that way.I also recommend that you download Picasa, a free photo organizer/editor
for your pictures: http://bit.ly/5f6HEt This way you bypass the lousy
nikon software altogether. Hope that was helpful,
Take Care,
-WN

Microsoft updates frequently make changes to the registry which cause our cameras to no longer be recognized. The simple solution is to start using a separate card reader.
